I loved Dunkirk, I think it may be my favorite Nolan movie, but where is it in all time war movies?
I think this depends on the viewer. Personally I thought the movie was fantastic in its take on a well known moment in WWII history, but with Nolan's unique take on time. My wife hated it because of the stressful musical score. Then there is one of biggest regrets in my recent life - probably the two most shared experiences I had with my dad was going to movies and A&M football games. He passed early in 2018. In 2017, as it turned out, the last game we went to Kyle Field together was a beat down by Auburn, and the last movie we got to see together was Dunkirk. The movie actually put him to sleep, and what he did see of it he thought "sucked". I really thought he would enjoy Dunkirk but for whatever reason, it just didn't work for him.

As for where Dunkirk ranks among war movies, I would say pretty high, but that's just my opinion.

Thank you for sharing. I hate to be that guy, but I think your dad enjoyed spending the time with you regardless of the outcome.

I agree with you I would have Dunkirk in my top 10 war movies, but I am not sure it is in the top 5. Which is why I think a movie like Patton (maybe my 1) will have a longer legacy than Dunkirk.

That's how I feel about Tarantino, Nolan, and Cameron. I like every single one of their movies (except Tenet which is okay), and are my only automatic watch directors.

Most all of my favorites are already listed, especially Gladiator, Avatar and Guardians of the Galaxy. For me, I would add Godzilla 2014 and Fantastic Mr. Fox.

I skimmed the list and a lot of my top ones in this period are mentioned. But I'm not sure I saw these.....and they would be 4 of my top 10 of the last 25 years (Gladiator is #2).

#1 Mulholland Dr. - the David Lynch masterpiece, and my favorite movie of the last 25 years - you have to watch it multiple times and talk to others or read about it to start to comprehend it. And if you watch it 10 times you'll see something new/different every time. Talk to someone else who has seen it more than twice and you can spend an hour talking about it with them. More mind bending than any Nolan film imho - and I love Nolan.

these would be in the top 10:

Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon - an absolute masterpiece of cinema. The first real foreign film that just blew me away.

Birdman - this movie damn near won the Big 5 - it won Picture, Director and Screenplay while Michael Keaton was nominated for lead actor (Eddie Redmayne won for The Theory of Everything). There wasn't a female "lead" per se but Emma Stone was nominated for Supporting Actress. It also won for Cinematography.

Spotlight - a true ensemble piece that still got 6 nominations and won for picture and screenplay. The (true) story was both gripping and painful to watch. I think it does not get as much attention because its such an ugly story and not fun to watch at all. Also not something anyone (myself included) probably ever wants to watch a second time. I was numb after viewing it and it stuck with me for days.

These would be in my Top 10 as well, not necessarily in order but:
Inglorious Basterds
The Dark Knight
Hell or High Water
Parasite
Oppenheimer - for now, we will see longterm but I think it will stick (otherwise The Departed gets the nod).

Thought I would throw in some documentaries that would make my top 25:
The Cove
Man on Wire
Free Solo

I saw Mulholland Drive once and never felt the need to see it again. Did nothing for me.

Love this thread. It got me thinking, maybe we need to have a spin-off thread.

In 1,000 years (a La the Hyperion mention?), what 1 movie do you most associate with certain actors and actresses? Likewise, what is the 1 most associated to each director?

What do y'all think? could be a fun topic.

Could also ask, maybe not which 1 movie, but what 1 character in the case of the acting.

There's a few arthouse movies that have really stuck with me though. Probably not for this discussion, but since Mulholland Drive was brought up...

Irreversible
Enter The Void
Melancholia

I could see all those being highly regarded in the future.

Denis Villanueve is right there with Nolan, as far as top directors in the 21st century. For me, they are 1a and 1b.

Speaking of Denis, I think Prisoners is a modern classic detective story that adds the second story element of how far a parent would go/snapped to save their kid.
