The Big 8 are:
Margaritaville
Come Monday
Cheeseburger...
A Pirate Looks at 40
Volcano
Fins
Changes in Latitude...
Why Don't We Get Drunk

Not my top 8 at all, but for his shows those are the 8 he had to play....

I always thought "One Particular Harbor" was one of the core group.

Pirate and Volcano are the only two of those that I'd probably put in my top 15. And Volcano is probably only because I love that whole Album so much.

Can't possibly try to rate! Here's a stab at a few favorites and why I like them:

  • Pirate
  • One Particular Harbour
  • Tryin' To Reason with Hurricane Season
  • [Deep Cut] Mile High in Denver (Down to Earth Album had a fun country feel to it - recommend a listen)
  • He Went to Paris
  • Grapefruit
  • Summerzcool (I might be the only one - but I thought this kicked ass for a summer jam)
  • West Nashville Grand Ballroom Gown (Kinda a call back to country roots!)
  • [Deep Cut] High Cumberland Jubilee
  • All Night Long - Duet w Lionel Richie (such a fun song - played at my wedding reception)
  • Migration
  • Changes
  • Banana Republics
  • Sailor
  • Cheeseburger (this was my first song introduction to Jimmy)
  • Manana
  • Fins! Volcano! (I'm trying to consolidate bullets already, see?)
  • Coconut Telegraph / Island / Weather is Here
  • Twelve Volt Man ( Love the lyrics on this one)
  • Who's the Blonde Stranger (This has some ties to Galveston. Think filmed or written while he was here. I don't recall)
  • [deep cut] Creola (Or is it a deep cut? This one is so smooth)
  • Jamaica Mistaka
  • (this list could go another 20)

Absolute favorite Jimmy Cover.... Gumbo! [Phish cover].

Spadilly - great pictures. I'll try and share some of mine (kid appropriate) over the weekend

Keep your Fins Up, yall

Trying to make a list of my favorites is too hard, but mainly because they change every time I throw on an old album or depending on what mood I'm in.

That said, here are some thoughts:

1. Tin Cup Chalice - this is my absolute favorite. It captures the spirit and love of being next to the water in such a great way. Every time I hear it, I'm immediately on a mental vacation on the beach.

2. Barefoot Children - The Barometer Soup album is one I just keep coming back to and never get tired of. I'm a weather nerd, so right off the bat in this song I am smiling when Jimmy starts singing about lightning, thunder, and Heaven's ragtime band. As a father, nothing is better than seeing the kids run around in the rain and not have a care in the world. We all could use a little more of that childlike spirit these days.

3. Trying To Reason With Hurricane Season - As a lifelong Houstonian, we have had our share of tropical storms and hurricanes devastate our region. Here comes another hurricane season...

4. One Particular Harbour - This is the song that I always looked forward to the most when I saw Jimmy live. See, I tried to take at least one first timer every time he came through, and my personal motto is "the first time's free" for my friends (borrowing that line from I Will Play For Gumbo).
If they had never seen him live, I paid for their ticket. I passed out hula skirts and leis to my group before the show. When OPH came on, I went to work and started the conga line on the lawn. That is the moment in the show where the Margaritaville experience took hold of me and I believe the moment my friends realized why I love this stuff so much.

Others:
  • Distantly In Love - my favorite Buffett song to play when I pick up my guitar
  • Little Miss Magic - Already told my wife and little girl this will be the father/daughter song whenever my girl gets married.
  • False Echoes - Perfect lyrics. And James Taylor singing on it with him? So good.
  • The Captain and The Kid
  • Migration - I got a Carribean soul I can barely control and some Texas hidden here in my heart!
  • Semi-True Stories
  • Livingston's Gone To Texas
  • He Went to Paris
  • The Night I Painted The Sky
  • Trip Around The Sun - I've listened to this song every year on my birthday since it came out.
  • Island
  • Pirate Looks at 40
  • Death of An Unpopular Poet
  • Bank of Bad Habits, Jamaca Mistaka, Lage Nom Ai, I Will Play for Gumbo, Summerzcool, Mexico, Love and Luck - these are just so much fun to throw on and great live songs
  • I could go on and on, but I'll throw one more in:
  • Ballad of Spider John - this was a very pleasant surprise in the set during the final show I saw him at (Woodlands '22)

One that I think is underrated is Coast of Carolina:

I can't see the future but I know it's coming fast
It's not that hard to wind up knee deep in the past
It's come a lot of Mondays
Since the phone booth that first night
Through years and miles and tears and smiles
I want to get it right

These days I'm up about the time I used to go to bed
Living large was once the deal, now I watch the stars instead

One of my absolute favorites (and favorite songs in general) is tree top flyer, the hidden track on the end of...fruitcakes? I was so proud of myself in 1997 or so when I figured out to clip it the mp3 so I could just have that song.

"I Wish Lunch Could Last Forever"

"No Plane on Sunday"

"Schoolboy Heart"

Three new songs now up at streaming services. Bubbles Up was his goodbye??

At midnight on September 8, the late great Jimmy Buffett released three new singles from that eternal 5 o'clock up in the sky. The songs, "Bubbles Up," "My Gummie Just Kicked In," and "Like My Dog," had been previewed in short radio sneak peeks as part of the rollout for his upcoming album, Equal Strain On All Parts, which will have a posthumous release this November. Now, all three are available streaming in full.

I found this interesting.. not sure of accuracy though. Per setlist.fm;

Jimmy buffet has 2284 shows in the database, and 2185 of them are USA. Just 99 shows in another country (with 81 of those 99 in canada, france, australia and st barts).
I guess he had next to no fan base outside of the US?

he also played riverbend music center in OH every year since 1988, except 2020.

Since Jimmy's death, I've been doing a deep dive on his catalog, relistening to albums I hadn't heard in years, including some of those '80s and '90s albums that often get overlooked by his monster hits.

It's amazing how many really special songs he wrote or covered. The guy could paint a picture with his lyrics, that's for sure. And he had a way of turning others' songs into his own classics.

Sure, every album has a couple of throwaways. But there are gems everywhere.

As he said on the "You Had to Be There" recording ... "there's a lot of good %$&@ on those albums."

It's not just the new stuff:
Quote:

According to Billboard, Jimmy Buffett's signature song, "Margaritaville", has made a major comeback. The song which originally peaked at #8, on the Billboard Hot 100, in 1977, has re-entered the Top 40. The iconic track is currently sitting at #38.

And:

Quote:

The late Jimmy Buffett, who died on Sept. 1, returns to the top five of the Billboard 200 albums chart as his best-of collection Songs You Know by Heart: Jimmy Buffett's Greatest Hit(s) re-enters the Sept. 16-dated list at No. 4. It marks the album's highest rank ever and first week in the top 10, or even top 40, dating to its release in 1985 and Buffett's 13th top 10-charting album.

I've been doing the same thing. Opened "Jimmy Buffett Disography" in Wikipedia on one tab and have been cycling through his albums from beginning to end. I'm embarrassed at how little of his catalog I have listened to, there are some real gems in there.

McCartney said he thought Bubbles Up was the best vocal work Jimmy has ever done, and I think he is spot on. His voice is strong if a bit lower than previous albums and just really clear.
