Most late night hosts now don't write political jokes to make people laugh anymore. They write political jokes for applause. This goes both ways.

That's the biggest issue.
Everything about these big shows is targeted to the audience they think will make them the most money. Unfortunately, anything political brings the clicks/views these days. I'm sure these late night shows have all sorts of research that points to leaning one side means more revenue. Sometimes it misses, sometimes it doesn't.

I find it kind of funny that we have all agreed that reality TV is fake and purely manufactured to get the most engagement from their audience. But when it comes to late night, comedy, movies, etc. we still hold on to this idea that it isn't just a facade to make the most money possible.

Lemme guess, if I scroll back a few pages I'm going to find some comments from posters I've never seen on this board before who immediately made things political...

He was also just a geniunely good interviewer, and knew that the viewer was tuning in to see the guests be funny. So he would set them up for jokes, instead of making it all about him

Honestly, the biggest thing is Conan would let his guests answer a ******* question without interrupting or giving an annoyingly fake laugh for anything they say.

And the times a guest would make Conan genuinely laugh were always hilarious.

Frack I think it was me. My apologies to all for the truly unintentional derail.

I should have instead said we used to watch him because he was not overly political and even when he made political jokes they were usually funny and didn't sound like intentional attempts at an insult masked as a joke, unlike his peers. Possibly trying to tow that line offended staffers.
Staff - take out the trash.

Conan's political jokes were always silly and fun. There's nothing wrong with political jokes, but there is definitely a difference between what Conan did/does and what others do.

Hell, you can watch interviews with him talking about these things. He obviously knows there's a difference, and references it. Many posters on this board recognize there's a difference. There are only the usual few posters gaslighting everyone else and saying it's the same as it's always been.

Even with trump, I found Conan's bits with the "recorded" phone calls between trump and Obama to be hilarious. Alec Baldwins portrayal on SNL was simply mean spirited, in contrast to how the others represented the other side's characters.

SNL secretly hoped Trump would get re-elected so they wouldn't have to actually work and have fresh ideas.

That was four years of laziness.

Yeah, it was more that Trump just provided a whole lot more material to make fun of. Whether you believe him to be a good president or not, it's hard to dispute that. Biden and Obama for the most part are/were boring.

It's not a D/R thing, it's simply who has more material you can work with. Bill Clinton used to constantly be the butt of late night jokes, and I believe it was Conan that routinely had bits where a fake bill clinton was talking about his sexual exploits.

And watching some of those Conan clips... I'm pretty immune to most of the hollywood scandal stuff because I simply don't put much care into what an entertainer does in their personal life.

But if there was ever kind of nefarious scandal that came out about Conan I'm not sure I could handle that. Guy just seems genuinely like a great, funny guy.

Agreed. From how people close to him talk about him, he seems to basically always be himself. In fact, the gag is that he treats his employees horribly. When that's the gag, then you know the opposite is the real truth.

I just also think he interviews much better than any other current late night host, and does such a better job of setting up their jokes. I saw a recent YouTube video someone made comparing them all, and it's amazing how bad colbert and Fallon are at interviewing. Maybe it comes fown to how good one is at improv? Idk...

Also, I would love to hear Conan on Rogan. That would be such a great episode.

The fact that Conan's assistant, who'd be the first to get treated like **** if it was that kind of show, loves Conan, invited him to her wedding, and now co-hosts his podcast, says everything about Conan.

He ****s on his employees, but always for laughs and in good fun. When he confronts Jordan Schlansky about his elitist espresso machine is an all-timer.

This is a great point.

An example. Kimmel made a "joke" about letting the unvaccinated die on the street in front of the hospital. Literally said if unvaccinated person needed urgent medical care they should be denied and just die. My wife and I did not have our very healthy teenage sons vaccinated. Our pediatrician was at first vehemently pushing parents to vaccinate their teens. Then he completely stopped and pivoted to "parents should make informed decision about what they feel is best for their kids".

Anyway, Kimmel laughed at his own joke. The audience roared. I don't watch any of this, just saw the clip months later. It's funny to joke that a teen needing emergency care should just die on the street because his parents didn't force the jab on him? Really?

That's the level of ugliness I think a lot of folks may be referring to and what has soured them on late night.

Conan's absurd sense of humor and silliness had such an influence on so many. I think the episodes of the Simpsons from his era are imprinted on my neurons i saw them so many times. His podcast also shows what makes a good host - genuinely listening to people and responding, and letting the conversation go where it takes them. The recent episode with Quest Love is a great example.

IMO, no one was worse interviewing guests than Leno. He had his stack of cards and asked the questions, never asking a follow up, just dead-eyed moving on to the next question on his card.

Man I liked Fallon's original late show when it first came out. But man has his schtick gotten stale. The tonight show is hard to watch.

And Conan really is the GOAT. His podcast is great. His ability to riff off the cuff and play off his guests is incredible.

This is a hit piece, clearly

People who go to work a job like this should know what they're getting themselves into

Newsflash, work is stressful. There's gonna be conflict

Too many these days expect to earn money and be happy 100% of the time in doing so

Fallon is being lambasted for living life. Pretty hilarious

Such a great bit. I definitely agree, he's completely caught off guard...I don't think Conan is a good enough actor to sell it that well.

The man is a tool, and I hope he gets cancelled by his fellow leftists loonies, but he won't, the left defends their own no matter how illegal, wrong, or immoral. He is a high priest of the ends justify the means.

He was funny on SNL, gets his own late night show, Trump gets elected, Jimmy and his writing staff lose their minds.

Does anyone on this thread or on this board watch his show? If so, do y'all think it's funny?!?

I dont think anybody those types of shows are funny.
