A long time ago
No shoes on my feet
I walked ten miles of train track
To hear Hank Williams sing
His body was worn
But his spirit was free
And he sang every song
Looking right straight at me

I remember the first time I listened to "I'm so Lonesome, I Could Cry". The way he could convey the pain with his voice was almost soul-crushing. I've grown to like his music so much more than his son's.

Two great tributes.

Has there been an artist in any genre who left such a lasting legacy? The sheer number of songs that name-drop Hank -- or that are 100 percent about him -- is incredible.

Here's another good one:

from REK

Then there was the time
I saw the great Hank Williams singing on the stage in Philadelphia,
Pennsylvania and he was all dressed up in drag
From his rose red lips to his rhinestone hips he belted
out song after song as he drank from a brown paper bag
And the songs he sang of love and pain,
so pure perfect reflections of human imperfections,
it damn near choked me up

I wanna see our defense pissed off, not confused, maybe a little murder in their hearts Reload12, 11/4/11

I like Hank Williams. He's not that much older than my parents. That's pretty doggone scary.

Quote:

Country music hadn't gone to New York City yet;
And a service man was proud of what he'd done;
Hank and Lefty crowded every jukebox;
That's the way it was in '51.

Man, I do love some Emmylou, but in honor of Hank, let's go full blown honky tonk on the song with Stoney Edwards:
