Tony Gillroy filmed it as 4 3-hour movies.
just admit you did not bother to read the OP, that you are wrong, take the loss and move on.

I did read it and I decided to be an ass anyway.

Airplane!

Flying crafts, artificial intelligence, a pilot metamorphosis and the sinking realization that someone picked the wrong week to stop sniffing glue.

Listen I love Armageddon as much as any 90s kid, but above Alien(s)? C'mon now.
Steve Buscemi was in Armageddon and not Alien(s) and that's why it's better.

Second reply fails to follow the rules. Never change texags

I feel like this is a challenge to simply name Sci fi movies in this category.

Annihilation

Does Alf count as Sci fi? lol

The best thing that happens on this website is when someone asks for help with a specific question and then there is an outpouring of responses telling the OP to do something completely different than what they are asking advice about. Basically every single post asking for help with a problem follows this basic outline.

I'm surprised Arrival isn't getting more love here. Great movie with fascinating plot and excellent acting. Definitely is kind of sad though.

Since we've probably run the gamut on single word ones, and Alien seems to be the consensus, how about two words?

Some candidates --

Artificial Intelligence
Another Earth
About Time
Ad Astra
After Yang

(Yes, I know I counted AI before, but I'm cheating because I really like this one. This is my pick.)

But, I really like Another Earth and About Time. They're probably tied for second for me. All three are underrated in my book.

After Yang is on my watchlist, gotta do that one soon.

Woof, that was a bad brainfart. After Earth is trash. Fixed to Another Earth.

Artificial Intelligence, yes.

NOT Alien Resurrection (steaming pile of garbage) - just throwing this one out there since it is a 2-word title but that movie sucked.

Ad Astra was a snoozefest and such a disappointment.

I recently re-watched Arrival, and I forgot how fundamentally excellent it actually is. Start to finish, story telling to special effects, acting, cinematography, score. It's got it all.

The ending of that movie, over the Max Richter's "On the Nature of Daylight" may be one of the single best endings to a movie I have personally ever seen. I will not spoil it in case someone here missed it, but the dialogue and Louise's last line, followed by the title page, is absolutely incredible.

We are all entitled to our opinions, but wrong.

Alien is a superior movie across the board. James Cameron did a fantastic job in crafting a worthy sequel, as evidenced by both the lackluster-to-****ty sequels that followed, and the fact that even Ridley Scott had trouble putting together two prequels that would meet audience expectations.

Alien, however, set standards in cinematography, set design, creature design and effects, miniature work, and production design and artwork. Alien also had one thing that none of the sequels could have, which was an element of both surprise and mystery with regard to the critter. Aliens took what existed and maintained similar aesthetics with regard to its own production design and creature effects.

I recall reading some movie magazine in the early 80s talking about a possible Alien II, but then nothing ever came of it. Then I am in my apartment in the spring semester of my fish year at A&M, reading the Batt. There was a section about upcoming entertainment options for the coming summer season, and there was when I first saw that the sequel was a real thing. And I was super excited that it was the director of The Terminator who had made it. The movie did not disappoint, but improving upon perfection is a tall ask.

Gotta throw the Andromeda Strain on there.

But it's Arrival for me. Smart in both the technical and the plot.

Put me in the Alien over Aliens camp. It's close, you're really splitting hairs. Both are amazing movies.

Also, Arrival is so good. Need to watch that again.

Love Alien(s), but I have to go with Arrival. The source short story by Ted Chiang is even better and one of my favorite sci-fi stories of all time.
