Check out this new single Drake released ahead of the album release tonight.

Heavy "Nothing Was the Same" flavor on this one. This could be promising.

I've tried listening to his music but I can't get into it. I struggle to understand why this generation of rap fans likes to lump in Drake with Kendrick and J. Cole as the best of their generation.

And before someone says, "just don't post on the thread" I figure this thread would bring out some Drake fans who could give some insight and discuss.

I've never heard anyone do this. I don't think I've even heard Kendrick and J. Cole grouped together all that much aside from the very few diehard J. Cole fans I've come across.

Interesting. I consistently see these 3 posted as the best of this generation on social media.

Edited my original post for clarity.

I do as well and don't care for any of the three and am not some sort of music snob but am a victim of growing up in the golden era and thus got spoiled.

Nothing hip-hop/rap wise in the mainstream has appealed to me in the past decade, although I can see the talent in Kendrick. The last "newest" artist in the genre to grab me was Kid Cudi 15 years ago. I did just read that Pete Rock and Common are in the lab to produce an album bringing hip-hop back to its roots and that pleases me.

Sorry-OP...didn't mean to derail. Each to their own and hope you enjoy.

Drake has two or three different flows he uses consistently that make a lot of his songs sound similar. I haven't really like a song of his since 2014. Although the one that went viral where he was dancing and wearing a sweater was fun.

I do really like this music video of him giving money to people around the UM campus. It makes me tear up every time.

I can pretty much only listen to Drake on songs he does with 21 Savage and similar artists. His flow and the beats in songs like the OP are just boring and vanilla to me.

Not at all! I love the thought discussion. Better than a random person coming in here and saying "NO".

I have a wide span of taste in music. I have been to Drake concerts, Jimmy Buffett concerts, Metallica last month and I'm going to see Polyphia in November.

I do see what you mean about mainstream rap and it's not as great as what Dre did in the 90s early 2000s. But for some reason I've always been a huge Drake fun. First two albums were my favorites then kind of just picked songs from different recent albums I like. I hope this album sounds like his first two.

Yeah I love the savage album but I like the regular Drake style too. Shout out OVO Sound

I agree with that, but I do enjoy the ones he does with his freestyle type flow, so if the song is some time at somewhere, I usually dig it. I like the new single.

I have a tradition of staying up until midnight and cracking open a bottle of champagne to drink while I'm listening to the new Drake album.

This pretty much sums up how I feel. Definitely have to be in a very specific mood or setting to get into a Drake song; he's not a rapper that I'm ever going to just throw on during a roadtrip because it mostly sounds like background noise to me.

But I am not the norm and he has clearly found a killer formula, so power to him

New album is good so far. Some standouts: Drew a Picasso, the song with J Cole, the song with 21 savage, the song with Yeat, the song with Chief Keef.

I still feel like his first album is his best. Or at least it's the only one I like. It was all over the place with different styles and feels. It was almost like he was an artist who hadn't really found himself so was trying thing.

Then Take Care came out and it was like he found himself, but unfortunately it was as this mellow R&B/rap vibe. I felt like every song on that album was 4+ minutes of mellow and there were 18 tracks. I struggled to make it through because it got boring to me. I've pretty much felt the same on every album since. I'll like a track or two from each album but every time I try to listen to a full album I can't make it through.

No hate for him though. As I heard Rick Rubin say on his podcast, "it's just not for me"

Funny this came up here because I'm listening through the album for the first time and on the J Cole feature, Cole actually says:

Love when they argue the hardest MC
Is it K-Dot? Is it Aubrey? Or me?
We the big three like we started a league

Someone mentioned earlier about how they don't see how j Cole and Drake fit.

I've been following both careers for a while now. Drake and J Cole have been boys since day 1. While Cole was on his come up, Drake was already largely popular but he treated Cole with a lot of respect and helped him rise

I love the Take Care album.

I went to the Drake vs Lil Wayne tour and it was good times

Right, but the debate above occurred before that record dropped.

And then on the song, Cole talks about people having that debate. It made me laugh.

Search & Rescue is one of my favorite songs of the last year. I'll have this one on rotation for sure.

Found the guy that just likes beats, take care is easily his best album.
