The scene where she is in the kitchen of the Christmas Eve party is what put her over the top for me.

The whole Christmas Eve party is my second favorite part after Cherries Jubilee.

Just saw it on Peacock. Terrific!
And the young actor who plays Angus has one bright career ahead for him.
Family, Friendships, Parenting, class distinction, being a kid, doing the right thing- it's all there.

I was reading about the actor who played Angus. Apparently he was actually a student at the school where the movie was filmed. He had gone off to Carnegie Mellon in the drama department for one year but they had an open casting call for students from the school where it was filmed. The part of playing Angus was his first role in a movie. What a fortunate break and the kid's career is about to take off.

We watched it last night after having watched Everything Everywhere All at Once the night before. Talk about polar opposites in every way (including our reactions to them). EEO was weird and enjoyable only in parts, and my wife didn't like it at all.

The Holdovers, OTOH, was practically perfect. And having grown up in the 70's I can attest that they nailed it in that respect.

Watched it on Peacock for free.

WOW this movie was amazing. And I had high expectations. And I have not read any reviews here yet.

The triumvirate of Giamatti, Da'Vine and Dominic Sessa was nothing short of incredible. All three should be nominated (actor, supporting actress and supporting actor I suppose). the fact that this was the young guys first film of any kind is just incredible.

But anyway perfect script, dialogue, acting, setting, cinematography and the soundtrack might be the best thing of all absolutely perfect.

I can't stop thinking about this movie really. The number of times I laughed out loud considering it's situation comedy and not slapstick or gag humor was shocking.

Funnier and more poignant than Sideways if you want to make that comparison - cuz of the director and Giamatti.

I LOVE Da'Vine in Only Murders and she is better here and used more of course.

My wife and SIL loved it too and I would say it is not in their usual wheelhouse. They were marvelling at it after without prodding from me. I unabashedly loved it.

Got a chance to watch this last night and it was great. The three leads were perfect. Loved the 70s feel and the way it was shot. Having watched Oppenheimer last weekend I'd say this is actually a perfect double feature for that one, it's the absolute opposite, but in the best way. Highly recommend this one as a holiday film for adults.

Giamatti's lazy eye kept me rolling. Every time it switched it helped lighten the mood without having to add an unnecessary joke. I appreciate small stuff like that.

The fact that they made it a joke in the movie was both surprising but also perfect.

I might mention there were some scenes that brought to mind some other great mentor/student movies specifically

Scent of a Woman
Dead Poets Society
Good Will Hunting
Breakfast Club (to a lesser degree but with the students by themselves, not with the teacher)

While I don't think it was intentional - those are some great company to be in regardless.

Are they using this movie to push paramount subscriptions?

One showing a day near me at 10 am…..not showing after today.

Now one showing in the Houston area at 10:30 pm.

Blah.

It's been in theaters since late October and in wide release since November 12. Not a full theatrical run, obviously, but it's still had a pretty healthy little two+ month run at this point. Now, you can either rent it for $5.99 via a single-month Peacock subscription or $19.99 via traditional digital outlets. Pretty standard stuff in this day and age.

Finally got around to seeing this and really enjoyed it.

Such a great combination of clever humor, snark, heart, and quality acting. Really enjoyed the soundtrack too.

Film is getting screwed...only one theater near me ever had it and only one showing a day at 10 am...the place showing it today is 45 minutes away at 10:20 PM...

not healthy little run in Houston as far as I can tell.

no biggie, I won't die if I wait until it's on a service I already have. Just would have preferred a theater over TV.

I missed seeing it in College Station so I just bought the blu ray on Amazon for $20.

Money well spent. Excellent story telling as one other user said….though it has some takes from other movies, it felt organic and didn't fall into many typical cliches. I hope it wins a lot of Oscars because it deserves it. I looked up the screenwriter David Hemingson on IMDb. Had wrote mostly in TV but not much in movies, which I thought was cool. As much as the humor hit, the emotional scenes hit more. I definitely felt sad and empathetic to the situation the 3 of them were in. I don't know if I'll watch it every Christmas, but it's had me thinking about the movie over the last few days after watching it.

Do you think they'll have the momentum to each win an Oscar?

I'm wary since it has been getting tagged as a Christmas movie.

Da'Vine will be the favorite to win Best Supporting Actress, but as of now it's almost assuredly going to be Oppenheimer in most of the other shared categories (Best Actor, Best Director, Best Picture, etc).

Thanks.

I watched this movie again on Friday night. It's just so damn good.

It may not be the best movie ever, but it sure beats out thousands of other movies for something I want to watch.

He obviously had a stylist for the occasion, but I wonder how far out of character wearing something like that is for this dude since he was a JAG until very recently. Normal people obviously don't dress like that

All I see is a suit, silk shirt without a tie, and sunglasses. Pretty classic look. I would bet it's way more "normal" than others walking down the red carpet last night.

A silk shirt is a classic look? Unbuttoned that low? I would beg to differ. I'm not knocking the guy at all, btw.

Tailor-made clothes, expensive material, stylish belt, hair just-so; yeah a stylist fixed him up! And why not, he's gone from JAG to the Golden Globes and soon to be at the Oscars.

The story about how they found him is pretty interesting.
https://www.latimes.com/entertainment-arts/awards/story/2023-12-11/dominic-sessa-finds-his-sudden-holdovers-fame-incredibly-surreal

Says he was mainly interested in playing hockey, but broke his femur his freshman year at Deerfield Academy (says it is one of the oldest boarding schools in America). Decided to join drama classes, and there you go.

His look/performance in the movie made me think of a younger Patrick Wilson

Yes, it's a classic cool guy, Bob Dylan, James Dean type look overall. Classic for famous folks. Way more traditional than say... wearing a dress made of meat.
