Well this sucks.

Most screenwriting plagiarism claims are full of sh*t and go nowhere, but this one is pretty damning...

How is this only coming to light the night before the Oscars? Seems very interesting timing.

It's in the article. The writer/accuser has been raising a stink since January with the WGA. But the WGA initially said it's not their issue for some reason (though that could be changing), and so now he's suing. There's quite a bit of damning evidence at the end of the article, in a whole packet/argument his team put together.

That's why I'm asking. It seems odd for the trades to have held this back until right before the Oscars. Seems almost purposeful.

I don't think they necessarily "held it back." As late as March 5 they were still making inquiries to the WGA, trying to get to the bottom of it. It sounds like it's either taken this long (since January) to do an investigate themselves - or - they didn't get wind of it until the last few weeks, having gathered as much info as they could, and then pulled the trigger at the last possible moment, when the story would get maximum play.

All of that said, the scene-by-scene comparisons are pretty weak. The structure is incredibly, eerily similar. But the examples provided of the scenes/screenplay pages that are being compared side-by-side to each other don't really hold water for me.

I have 37 years of experience detecting plagiarism in college and high school essays. That's before Turnitin, too.

I did not take the time to read through every single word of the "evidence" in the accusation, but after a quick glance at the whole and close scrutiny of a couple of instances cited, I have two observations:

1. Hollywood screenplays that follow SIMILAR FORMULAS? Horrors!

2. I don't see any of the "line for line" similarities that the accusation says exist.

Not a convincing argument to me, but then maybe I don't understand the world of plagiarism as it applies to Hollywood.

I just watched this last night after briefly skimming just the first few posts of this thread because I didnt want to ruin it.

That movie was incredible. I didnt really know where it was going.I was starting to like the vibe that Angus was getting with the group, and then they just up and vanished from the story and it became Paul and Angus.

Amazing performance by Giamatti, Sessa, and Randolph.

One of the best films I have seen in some time and will definitely rewatch some time in the future, which is something I dont typically do.

Just FYI, this is out on Prime, free if you're a member. I loved it, and my teenage son complained about the length but didn't disagree when I said it was good and worth it.

Definitely check it out if you haven't yet.
