The Projection List

So I'm consideration resurrecting The Projection List, my old movie & TV release date site. It was relatively popular back in 2015, to the point where a larger industry site eventually teamed up with me, in attempt to build a much bigger industry database, but for a few reasons - primarily of which was a business partner I shouldn't have gone into business with - the whole thing went belly up in 2018. I had temporarily paused The Projection List only a few months after it launched, to concentrate on building the newer/bigger site, but just didn't have the desire to resurrect it when everything went south.

That said, people to this day ask me about the old TPL site, because there's still somehow not a single, go-to, at-a-glance site for looking up release dates. And especially in the streaming world we're in now, where it can be confusing as hell what's releasing in theaters (never mind if it's a limited or wide release) vs. digital vs. streaming, I feel like The Projection List could be more vital than ever.

Or am I wrong? Do you guys feel like you have a handle on what's releasing when and where? Or are you having to go to multiple sites/streamers to figure it all out and/or rely on what is posted here on TexAgs?

What I'm potentially looking to do would essentially consist of three tabs - MOVIES, SERIES, and TRAILERS. Each in spreadsheet form - but super clean and slick - where each movie would have LIMITED (theatrical), WIDE (theatrical), (digital) RENT, (digital) BUY, and STREAM release dates/columns, where you could sort by any of those columns, search by movie titles, distributors, streamers, etc. Then there would be the Fandango, Just Watch, and IMDb inks for each movie as well, all right there, all on the same page. The entire release calendar from the current week to years in the future. Same for TV series (seasons not individual episodes), and then the trailer section would be every trailer released on YouTube - for both movies and TV - every day, all in one place.

To build out the database and the site would of course take some time and money (I'd handle the database and hire someone or a company to build the site), but once that's done, the daily database upkeep on my end wouldn't be that hard - only 30 or so minutes of my time per day - for something the industry and fans could benefit from, and that I could eventually make some passive income on with ads. Part of me really wants to give it another shot, and do it my way 100% this time, but I'm also busy enough with my other work that I don't exactly welcome the extra time and effort it would take to build the initial database (at least a couple months), never mind overseeing the construction of the site itself.

Hence me gauging initial interest/testing the waters here.

So... thoughts? Yay or nay to something like this?

I like when you curate these lists just for us on texags.

But no, the site would be cool. Don't know how much I'd use it since I'm always looking on the entertainment board here, but I'd spread the word.

Ha, definitely not asking for money. If I decide to do this, I can handle the costs. If anyone happens to know any good web designers, though, who are particularly knowledgeable about databases, and can implement front-end, spreadsheet functionality, that would be helpful. I would design the look, down to the pixel, I just need someone to build it. I'd probably just find a company here in LA, but would not at all opposed to hiring an independent designer, if they were the right fit.

Would you use a customizable website with spreadsheet-like functionality that lists all release dates for all movies (and a good chunk of scripted TV shows) across theatrical, digital, and streaming? With links to tickets, digital platforms, and streaming platforms for every single release? Or do you already have a resource (or resources) that meets your needs?

I know a lot of people would use it. Considering that I only care about maybe 5% of what comes out of Hollywood I wouldn't necessarily want to look for it on a bigass table. I just Google the particular movie/show I'm looking for.

To be clear, when you land on the page, the "WIDE" movie releases column would be highlighted by default, and the current week's releases would automatically be at the very top of that column. So no pouring through a big table or anything like that. Then, say, if you click on the "RENT" column, all of the new movies available for rent that week would sort to the top of that column, etc.

That would be huge.

I'm not sure I'd personally use it though. To be honest, most tv/movies just do internet me anymore.

Simple answer is yes. The trailer aggregation alone would be worth it. I used to go to the Apple Trailer page all the time, but it isn't as user-friendly as it used to be.

I love the idea of this. I'm just not sure I would use it.

IMDB already does what you are talking about at the platform level in that it tells you what's being released or is showing on what platform.

It feels like yours would be more of a first look or advanced date and view of what IMDB already does closer in to release date?

What's keeping them from simply expanding their window and doing what you are proposing since they are already most of the way there?

I remember the old site, and talking about it at different times.

For the average consumer that's only really interested in a couple titles a year, most needs are probably met through existing sites or even conventional marketing. Something as comprehensive as what you're discussing seems more geared towards Uber-fans or influencers who want to feel like they're on top of the industry. And that may be a big enough audience now to sustain the site for all I know.

It would be cool if there was a simple way to search or get alerts for very specific topics, like individual titles or genres. Currently, if you sign up w/ Fandango or a theater chain to be notified when X comes to town, you end up on all their generic marketing lists. An improvement would be to get a notification when there's a release date for, say, a new SciFi or a new Western. One could then go to Fandango or something else to find local showtimes.

*I'll also add that I'm someone who probably prefers database tables to all the boilerplate fluff that gets in the way of information on most entertainment sites, so your concept makes perfect sense to me.

I was also looking at...

Will for sure look into CloudTables, though. Ultimately, I think I'd want something either completely bespoke or super customizable, but these ready-made versions are definitely an option. Thanks for the heads up!

Great to hear.

As for alerts, that's an interesting idea. It would obviously require users to have accounts, which I didn't have in mind, but that's definitely a feature I would run by any potential web designer to see how complex it is/isn't.

Regardless, I appreciate the feedback.

Was thinking about their Search function. You can filter by every platform and see what's Streaming, Coming Soon, or In Theaters. It's pretty damn slick.

So more of a near term and current release schedule vs yours which would be looking further out. Just wondering if they couldn't just do what you are doing by simply extending their window.

I love the idea though.

Couple other features to consider:
List out what day of the week streamers are airing. I can't remember half the time what night my shows air.

The ability to Tag or favorite a show or movie to notify me when it premiers.

Will add that a mobile app wouldn't work with what you are trying to do so may not be any competition there. I do not know what IMDBs website site looks like though because I never go to it.

Thanks, this is good to know. I never use IMDb on mobile, but this seems like a great feature. Mine would have basically the same functionality, but I like this layout more.

I love the tag/favorite feature. It's just a matter of how complicated it would be on the backend.

As for the days of the week, that's a great idea. I was trying to limit the number of columns, since horizontal space is at a premium, but TV would inherently have fewer columns than movies, so it would be totally doable to have a days of the week column as well.

Thanks!
