For me, it's Arrival. The ending to that movie is unfathomably sad. It's quite simply heartbreaking.

Lonesome Dove still tears me up 2-3 times per watch. I've watched it individually with each of my three oldest kids and it rocks their world as well.

As a father of daughters Steel Magnolias also thrashes me each time I watch it.

Arrival did such a great job of capturing the emotion of the short story it was based off of. One of the best adaptations I can remember.

I think I differentiate sad from depressing. For example: Requiem for a Dream is depressing and disturbing but I wouldn't call it sad. I think A Simple Plan would also fall into that category.

But maybe I'm unique or misunderstood what the OP was going for.

Flags of our Fathers, too.

I couldn't tell you a single thing about that movie, but I specifically remember my friend and I saying that was the most depressing movie we'd ever seen in theaters.
