Here's an obscure one. Revenge with Kevin Costner and Madeleine Stowe in the early 90s.

Not ashamed to admit LaLa Land ending was sad.

Not sure if really sad or just really good or both, but Last of the Mohicans.

I'm surprised no one has said Interstellar yet. Some might call it bittersweet, I suppose, but to me, it was pretty sad.

Can't watch that without wrecking my eyes. My wife refuses to watch it again it depresses her too much.

There's sad because it actually took place, so all of the brutal war/atrocity movies rank up there.

But fictional sad is another category.
I'll go with Manchester by the Sea. Even among other depressing movies that one was especially bleak.

Four Weddings and a Funeral.

Not just the funeral which is tragically sad and one of the greatest funeral speeches ever. But the entire movie masquerades as a romance movie yet it is full of grief, regret. unrequited love, sadness, depression and the ever present gloomy weather of london.

It is really a story of friendship through all of that making it totally realistic.

It's sort of the real world version of Love Actually.

I haven't seen Marley and Me.

We've been there too many times with our own dogs to need to live it over thru a movie.

Sophie's Choice is a heartbreaker.

At least with Schindler's List there a bit of redemptive life with the ending.

Sophie's Choice has no such redemption at the end. It's just a totally broken woman.

Not the whole movie itself, but it sure was sad when Theoden dies in Return of the King.

That whole movie bothers me, but the scene with Sean Penn at the zoo tears me up. I'm a father of two daughters and can't imagine what his character felt in that movie.

Tim Robbin's character bothered me as well. He had a tragic life.

Edit for spelling

Yep.

I'm not one to get emotional over movies -- I always smirk a bit when people say they "sobbed" at some movie -- but this one got me to tear up.

When I was in elementary school back in the 80's we watched the "The Happy Prince". That was a sad and depressing short film. I don't know why the teachers thought watching that was a good idea.

Got on here to post this one. I saw it soon after we had our first son making it really hit hard.

The one that also gets me every time is The Curious Case of Benjamin Button.
