I don't know if anyone here has seen 2015's Carol, but it's fantastic, and this is pretty much that, except if, say, Fincher or Scorsese took a swing. It's simple, sexy, moody, and peculiar - that is, until the final act, when it goes from psychological noir to full-on thriller, which is sure to rub some people the wrong way. Personally, though, I found it to be a such a fun and compelling twist. I could have easily used another 20 minutes or so throughout - it definitely leaves you wanting more, in both good and not so good ways - but at a tight hour-and-a-half, if anything, it's absolutely worth the relatively quick time commitment. Not to mention, it looks incredible, paints such a perfectly bleak/authentic atmosphere (1960s small-town Massachusetts in the dead of winter), and the three leads - Thomasin McKenzie, Anne Hathaway, and Shea Whigham - all knock it out of the park.
Theatrically, it's out in limited release this weekend, but will surely be on digital within the next month or so, and I highly recommend checking it out by either means...
EILEEN is streaming on Hulu, and it’s well-worth a look. Pleasantly sick and twisted, a psychosexual pulp noir set in frigid ’60s Massachusetts and elevated by a glorious turn by Anne Hathaway, magnetic in the mold of Hepburn or Vitti but concealing a more sinister, rotten core. pic.twitter.com/3wthWzdBtv
I'll add this to my list. My wife hates horror movies (and I love them), but she can stand a psychological thriller or two occasionally and she loves Anne Hathaway, so this should be something we can both enjoy.
I'm not familiar with any of Todd Haynes works, so if this is good I will check out Carol.
