Time for y'all to complain about another list: https://www.rollingstone.com/tv-movies/tv-movie-lists/best-sci-fi-movies-1234893930/

Personally, I don't think Under the Skin should be on the list, much less top 10. Also think T2 is the most glaring top 10 omission. Haven't seen Stalker, but would have a hard time arguing to drop any of the others in the top 10. Definitely think Back to the Future, Aliens, and The Thing should be higher as well. Also Jurassic Park being so low is an absolute crime, should be top 20 at least.

Like most Rolling Stones' lists, it works too hard to show how edgy the author is rather than just doing what's obvious and correct. See their list of greatest guitarists that had Joni Mitchell 10 spots higher than Stevie Ray Vaughan.

Pleased with the ranking for Close Encounters, Children of Men and Arrival. Not happy with the low ranking of a few of my favorites particularly The Iron Giant. Let out a huge groan that Starship Troopers was 11, I know I should let it go and just go with the campy fun of it all but I just wish someone would just do a film closer to the actual novel.

The movie we got was better than anything they could have done that more closely tracked the novels. It is too high on the list either way.

they put starship troopers ahead of:

empire strikes back
the thing
planet of the apes
invasion of the body snatchers
eternal sunshine of the spotless mind
terminator 2

and that's only looking at films they ranked 15-30......that alone destroys any validity on this list....

People are too enamored with Starship Troopers the movie being a criticism of the book.

I have no issue being on the list, but 11 is just silly.

I spent nearly every Saturday afternoon from 1956-1961 in the movie theater of the tiny town in NW Louisiana in which I grew up. For fifty cents I got a ticket, a Coke, and popcorn.

I saw most of the great sci-fi classics on the big screen, all of which are on this list except one: the original The Thing from Another World (1951). I love the remake too, but it is too gory for my tastes.

The exclusion of that great movie means this is not a serious list and whoever put it together did not watch all these movies.

Sorry, but that movie is like making Satan the hero of the New Testament.

It's a complete *******ization of Heinlein's writing.

The book and the movie are not only different, it's almost like they are totally separate works of fiction that share a name.

I love them both.

lol. Every time I say I won't get suckered into the clear clickbait, and every time I do.

No problem with 2001, but Star Wars is arguably the most influential movie since Citizen Kane. Some of this is in conjunction with CE, but It basically created modern special effects, it created the whole action adventure genre almost single-handedly, it brought back the musical score as a central part of movies, and legitimized big budget sci fi, allowing it to become the dominant genre in film.
And lest you think I'm staning, AGI's hundred years a hundred movies has it as the 15th greatest movie all time across all genres.

So yeah, 9th on this list is silly. But the author knew what they were doing.

ANy list like this is dumb because no one can be objective about it and there is too much time gone by to compare eras. The only definitive list for great movies out there is the TPE 100.

Is Star Trek IV number 1 on the list? If not, it's not even worth opening.

That's a fun list. Lots of great movies, some that I want to watch again now. Quite a few that I've never heard of too, which is understandable when you've got a list of 150. The order doesn't really matter that much to me.

I love that movie. It's on the list, but not #1. And the author mentions a "Klingon Warbird" ship when it's actually a Bird of Prey. How embarrassing for him.

I think they work out what most people would consider the top 10 for whatever list they are doing and then just scatter those out among the top 50. Also need to include a few movies/songs/artists that no one has ever heard of.

That's the point. Also, Milton was able to do pretty well making Satan relatable.

Yeah… but what makes it even sillier is that Star Wars isn't event science fiction really.

That is because Starship Troopers the movie was designed to be a counterpoint to Starship Troopers the book. The fact that people have to be told this and it's not well executed, is why it should be much much lower on the list.

I love Starship Troopers the book, it raises an interesting look at should their be compulsory service to have the right to vote. It discusses the benefit of military service and can be viewed as the father of military sci-fi and mecha.

I don't want this to become too political, but it is firmly rooted in WW2 style thoughts about the military and it can be read to have a twinge of fascism to it. I think you could make a pretty compelling argument the book is about fighting communism. But it's ultimately it sits at the point between a young adult book and a novel, so its themes are merely presented and not fully explored. "The Moon is a Harsh Mistress" is a better example of Heinlein exploring his themes.

The "Forever War" (space Vietnam) is a much better criticism of Starship Troopers and that should be made into a movie. I would much rather live in a world we're a straight Starship Troopers movie and a straight Forever War movie were made.

But I have no issue with Starship Troopers the movie being made as a criticism of the book, but it was just done clumsily. Hence why it should be in the 70s to 100s with a blurb that says, "Hey look, movies can engage in the subject matter of the book and comment on the potential flaws. Now we just need someone to do a proper adaptation."

As to your example, there is plenty of entertainment that explores Lucifer as an anti-hero and explores the themes of "Better to reign in Hell than serve in Heaven" and can you rebel against an all knowing/all powerful being. The most prominent example being the tv show Lucifer? I am not saying people have to like it, but it has been done to general acceptance.

I just read "Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep" last year. And man that hurt my brain, in a good way. It is a funky book with some cool themes. But I think Blade Runner and Do Androids Dream broadly explore the same themes of alienation, ecological destruction, collapsing society, modern life creating artifice.

Do Androids did it from a 1960s perspective and Blade Runner did it from a 1980s perspective. I think a "truer" adaption of the book would be interesting as a mini-series.

But I don't see the movie and the book in this case being at odds with one and another as is the case with Starship Troopers. In fact, the book probably gave rise to the core idea of cyberpunk and the movie gave cyberpunk its look. So the book and movie work more hand in hand.

this. if the list was inline with the majority opinion, it would generate very little clicking and discussion.
