People are too enamored with Starship Troopers the moving being a criticism of the book.
I have no issue being on the list, but 11 is just silly.
Sorry, but that movie is like making Satan the hero of the New Testament.
It's a complete *******ization of Heinlein's writing.
That is because Starship Troopers the movie was designed to be a counterpoint to Starship Troopers the book. The fact that people have to be told this and it's not well executed, is why it should be much much lower on the list.
I love Starship Troopers the book, it raises an interesting look at should their be compulsory service to have the right to vote. It discusses the benefit of military service and can be viewed as the father of military sci-fi and mecha.
I don't want this to become too political, but it is firmly rooted in WW2 style thoughts about the military and it can be read to have a twinge of fascism to it. I think you could make a pretty compelling argument the book is about fighting communism. But it's ultimately it sits at the point between a young adult book and a novel, so its themes are merely presented and not fully explored. "The Moon is a Harsh Mistress" is a better example of Heinlein exploring his themes.
The "Forever War" (space Vietnam) is a much better criticism of Starship Troopers and that should be made into a movie. I would much rather live in a world we're a straight Starship Troopers movie and a straight Forever War movie were made.
But I have no issue with Starship Troopers the movie being made as a criticism of the book, but it was just done clumsily. Hence why it should be in the 70s to 100s with a blurb that says, "Hey look, movies can engage in the subject matter of the book and comment on the potential flaws. Now we just need someone to do a proper adaptation."
As to your example, there is plenty of entertainment that explores Lucifer as an anti-hero and explores the themes of "Better to reign in Hell than serve in Heaven" and can you rebel against an all knowing/all powerful being. The most prominent example being the tv show Lucifer? I am not saying people have to like it, but it has been done to general acceptance.
