34 years and the sets are still incredible. Watching with kids now and it blows me away how good some of these set pieces are. Wish more movies were made with practical effects like this. Pretty blown away how well this movie holds up. Would be perfect with just a few scene reshoots or CGI changes.

I saw it in the theatre with friends and loved it as a kid.

A few years ago, during Covid, we made our teenage sons watch it with their much younger cousins in Houston. Everyone had a blast. Such a great movie and definitely time period.

We watched this the other weekend with my kids aged 3 and 6 and they loved it. They said it was the best movie night we've had in a while.

Definitely holds up!

I wore out this VHS tape as a child. I loved the Disney World display for it as well.

Someone that knows the budgets and economics of filming please chime in.

I assume the reason we are seeing less and less practical effects is that CGI has just gotten cheaper and faster than practical effects?

My thing with CGI in lot of movies these days is, just because you can, doesn't mean you should.

2 things I noticed in HISTK were the blatant smoking by the neighbors dad and the cigarette butt being a key part of the plot and the kiss the daughter and neighbor do is a seriously deep French kiss. I doubt you would see either of those things today if the movie were made.

Given the choice between good practical effects and good CGI- I'll take practical.

Between bad practical and bad CGI - I'll take practical.

The hard choice is between good CGI and bad Practical. That's a toss up.

there was a thread on the OB board a few months back about remote controlled lawnmowers that inspired me to rewatch this movie. I was also surprised how well its held up. You never see it on TV, like it doesnt exist.

A big one is that practical effects require you to plan things out in advance. Lots of decisions have to be made prior to filming with practical but with CGI you can just get your shots and figure most out later.

Also this thread inspired me to introduce the movie to my kids.

Watched it with my kids a while back and it's just a great movie. My daughter cried harder when Anty died than I've ever seen her cry in any other movie. I was like....wow, good work team. Love that movie.

Watched it with my kids and they quite enjoyed it. It is a classic and was a nostalgia trip.

I dug pretty much every single practical effect.

The only one that made me laugh out loud was Anty vs the scorpion. I had forgotten how stop motion big monstery movie that fight seen was.
