Animal House
Totally incorrect. Still a "stop and watch" movie every time.

And St Elmo's Fire sucked from the start.
I loved St. Elmo's but mainly because I grew up along side the Brat Pack. Also, incredible soundtrack.

It holds up as a good depiction of the 80's yuppie lifestyle, along with Wall Street, Secret of My Success. I think it would also resonate with today's generation of post-grads trying to find their way. Just replace the sax with a DJ booth, change the newspaper writer to a blogger, change the coke to molly or some prescription drugs and it is 2024.

Flash Gordon
I saw this in the theater when it came out in 1980. I think it was meant to be purposely campy/cheesy. I remember it being cheesy in 1980.
Flash Gordon: The PG movie that rapidly accelerated puberty in 1980.

All the "unlimited ammo" action movies of the my childhood become harder and harder to watch.

SIXTEEN CANDLES

would be cancelled if it came out today.

literally they were celebrating date rape/carrying off a drunken girl to have @#@ with in back of Jake's car

I didn't see Independence Day when it came out, but when I saw it in college, I thought it was really bad. The graphics were terrible and the plot line and acting were really cheesy and bad. I doubt it would be any better today.

You should get a new son. Lonesome Dove is as good now on the 100th watch through as it was on the first.

And a kid who had to sleep under a Chinaman named after a duck's dork

For the record, this thread is about what movies hold up, not what would be cancelled. 16 candles is still a great movie.

Memories of middle school and the fight at the fountain and when Ralph Macchio pulls the switch out, every boy in my class goes OH YEAH all at once while the girls cringe.

Its been a while, but what doesn't hold up about this?

Maybe the fact that Kevin spacey is actually a child predator…..
So the real life actions of an actor in a movie will impact your enjoyment of it?

That would be like saying Michael Jackson's music "doesnt hold up".

I actually love usual suspects and several movies with Kevin Spacey; Seven…. Multiple others.

I was actually just saying that may be a reason some say it doesn't hold up. And the fact that it is a movie where Spacey is having fantasies about having sex with a friend of his HS daughter….

Of all the 80s teen movies, at least the ones I've seen, I've most enjoyed Less Than Zero and Valley Girl. Looking at the landscape today (regardless of genre), it really makes me wonder what in the hell happened to making a good and tight 90-100 minute movie. Wes Anderson still does, but who else? Could be blanking on a ton, tbf.

I mean I enjoy lots of longer stuff, but I get that tons (maybe most) people don't have the patience/time to sit through anything beyond that in one sitting. Wait duh, it's all the short form content out there that probably just makes directors/editors say, who cares? Stretch things out as a reaction, maybe?

I watched Fast Times at Ridgemont High for the first time in 30 years last week. It wasn't as good as I remember.

Held up? This movie was terrible the first time and gets worse by the day

Tied with Chicago as worst Oscar winner of all time
I liked Chicago but I think it was a weak winner. The Pianist was the best among that year's nominees, IMO.

Crash won in a pretty weak year. Brokeback Mountain probably should've won, but nothing nominated that year was great. I thought Crash was fine -- heavy handed but I enjoyed it okay.

Tom Jones is the worst Oscar winner I've ever seen and it's not close.

"Saturday Night Fever"

Music/dancing is iconic, but the story, character back stories, and "acting" ... brutal

Braveheart

Rewatched it awhile back and couldn't get over the bad acting and terrible accents. Overall just corny and tedious.

That's going to be an unpopular opinion.
