This was actually more difficult than I thought. I keep a list of favorite movies by release date, and I have 28 from 2000 on. I made a lot of cuts, and made The Lord of the Rings count for 1 movie, and still could only winnow down to 13.

In order of release date:

Almost Famous (2000)
In the Mood for Love (2000)
Memento (2000)
The Lord of the Rings (2001- 2003)
Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind (2004)
Pride & Prejudice (2005)
Children of Men (2006)
Michael Clayton (2007)
The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford (2007)
The Dark Knight (2008)
About Time (2013)
Hell or High Water (2016)
A Hidden Life (2019)
The Milkman

I'm seeing alot of Mulholland Drive. Frankly I've barely heard of the movie. Guess it should see it.

What's interesting is the lack of love for all the comic book movies.

They have been mostly forgettable for me, they kind of blend together and I stopped caring after a while.

I get that but they pretty much have dominated the last 15 years.

For me

Edge of tomorrow.

This was extremely difficult, I got to about 20 solid options then whittled it down with a bunch of 1:1 comparisons. That didn't make it any easier.

In order of release, I bolded my easiest choices to include:

  • LOTR...if you had to twist my arm to pick one, give me The Two Towers [2001-2003]
  • Catch Me If You Can [2002]
  • Master and Commander [2003]
  • Wedding Crashers [2005]
  • Casino Royale [2006]
  • Children of Men [2006]
  • The Dark Knight [2008]
  • About Time [2013]
  • Arrival [2016]
  • Top Gun: Maverick [2022]

Couple things of note:
Did no one list Pirates of the Caribbean? I know it's been over 20 years now, but that was such a massive movie and one of those universally-liked ones, similar to Top Gun: Maverick.

I'd be happy with flipping out the un-bolded stuff for some of my 11-20 movies, but the bolded movies are soldified right now in my top 10 of the century.

Avengers Infinity War
Avengers Endgame
Captain America The Winter Soldier
The Dark Knight
Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring
Guardians of the Galaxy
Star Wars: Revenge of the Sith
Star Wars: The Force Awakens
Gladiator
Top Gun Maverick

edit - remove The Force Awakens and replace with Interstellar
remove Revenge of the Sith and replace with Gladiator

Others - No Country For Old Men, The Martian, Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers, Lord of the Rings: Return of the King, Iron Man, Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny, Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, Batman Begins, Mission Impossible Fallout.
How the hell do I leave off Dune Part 1 or Rogue One? Or The Avengers, Captain America: The First Avenger, Captain America: Civil War, or Prometheus?

There are a few comic book movies making regular appearances on these lists, but there were a lot of other high quality movies released over these years as well. Many of which actually belong on such a list over the likes of most comic book movies.

Dune and Rogue one were in my running for Top 10. On any given day they might make it in over some of my unbolded movies. Probably just depends on the mood I am in. I was able to get a solid (for me) top 5, and the way I view 5-20 or so is that they are very close to one another.
Bruce Almighty

The problem that I always have with top 10 lists is that there are always around 5 selections that are slam dunk choices and 10-20 that I could fill out the rest with. My top 10 would change daily depending on my mood.

As I noted. With how many have been put out the past 15 years, none are really thought of as great that you can watch over and over.

For this type of list I think of a movie if I see it's on I cannot turn away.

The first Superman and GOTG might fall in this category. But for the most part they just have a sequence I like in the movie.
Gig ‘Em Baby!

It's funny, if but if I had never seen Master and Commander, and someone were to put it on a list while saying it's one of their most rewatchable, I would roll my eyes.

For a nearly 3 hour period piece about a british warship in the Napoleonic wars, I can watch that freaking movie over and over.

One of those has an active, 54-page-and-counting thread (started 19 years after its release, nonetheless), and the other comes & goes...the clear winner is LOTR

Because it was made as a single story, filmed at the same time, and all the filmmakers and actors always say they treated it as making one movie.

Same applies for Kill Bill, even more so because it was actually intended to be one movie until post-production.

Side discussion, but had any trailer ever announced multiple movies before the very first teaser for LOTR?
