The Vandals are so underrated. Love how one of them is an entertainment lawyer for other bands now.
Life's an endless party, not a punch card.

Never really got into them before, but in adding Vandals songs today, I discovered they did a fantastic cover of Don't Stop Me Now

Speaking of the vandals, this would never happen today.

They also played a benefit concert for the Cypress College Young Republicans, along with the Circle Jerks, the Dickies and D.I.,

Funny not to see The Replacements mentioned. They truly are one of the biggest unknowns. Every critics favorite band but never could sell albums.

Asking this as an admittedly-not-well-versed-in-punk music fan, although I generally like most of the stuff listed on this thread.

Do true punk fans consider Sum 41 to be part of the genre? All Killer No Filler was 8th grade me's intro to what I considered to be punk/pop punk, but looking back I'm curious if they were just hated by the community.

Personally, I like them. I know a lot of folks consider bands like them, Blink 182, and Green Day that got a lot more mainstream as less punk (or not at all), but I always think of them as good for the genre. I know if it wasn't for them, I never would have gotten deeper into it and discovered a lot of lesser known bands that I love

I like the Replacements a lot. Splitting hairs, but i think a lot of people consider them to be the part of the beginning of the indie/alternative college rock category as we know it now, along with bands like Husker Du and Sonic Youth.

Have listened to a lot of discussions over the years on whether punk music is defined by the music style, the date/time the band existed , the lifestyle of the band members., or whatever else anyone can think of to put a label on it., which is very un-punk.

This.

I've always appreciated the "punk ethos", but never a fan of the gatekeepers.

As for Sum 41's All Killer, No Filler, it was the first album I ever bought with my own money. I purchased it with Take Off Your Pants and Jacket my freshman year of high school with some Best Buy gift cards I got for Christmas. Those two albums will always hold a special place in my heart.

I also had my first kiss in the mosh pit of a Sum 41 concert from a girl I had just met... so I definitely appreciate me some Sum 41.

Pretty much why I said all is welcome in the OP. Always figure it will emerge sooner or later, but if I dig the song, I'll listen to it without a second thought

I did…. Looks good!

Saw some Screeching Weasel and Queers on there so it may be good. I'll always have a soft heart for 90s Ramones core pop punk. You should add The Lillingtons on there.

Sweet!

Was it post Ben punch a women at SXSW or after?

Personally I saw them before and after and they alwayw brought it. Or really in the middle since I was at that show. But, neither here nor there SW has to be one of the best, under the radar, punk bands of all time.

"My Brain Hurts" is a absolute classic and if you haven't listened go open it up on Spotify right now.

I was at the vice squad show at Fitz back in like 2004 or so one night houston got flooded and we couldn't leave. They left the bar open until like 4 am and no one could leave until the following morning. Not much was safe that day.

I was in to meathead tough guy hardcore and went to so many shows and it was not uncommon for big ole brawls to break out. It always surprised me when real nazis would show up to shows and then decided to self identify by seig heiling around the pit. Seen more than one carted off in the ole amber lamps. Seemed like there was always a beef between hardcore kids/street punks/skinheads/gutter punks/randos etc every show. As my time in the scene wound down I could see the changes happening. Shows were moving to the suburbs and the crowds were skewing younger, bands would stop playing if fights broke out and lecture the crowds and the tough guy sound was starting to fade. Of course there are still remnants of those aspects of the scene but it is completely different today. I know you're probably just quoting nofx, but I think the scene has changed dramatically over the last 20 years.

ETA - Every punk subculture offshoot hates gutter punks. They are the worst.

Thanks to this thread though, my kids got to listen to screeching weasel on the way to school this morning. Ashtray and My Right are 2 of my favorite songs ever.

Also somewhat surprised i haven't seen pennywise mentioned in this thread. Bro hymn is catchy af.

ETA - also surprised no mention of operation ivy. They are probably the top 5 intro to punk band for people my age in to punk. Misfits has to be number one.

I remember getting the toy machine welcome to hell skate video, which is still the best skate video of all time, and hearing the misfits on there and being completely hooked.

Ya know, I've been to a lot of Texas Stars games and they used to use that as their goal scoring song and I always figured it was dropkick Murphys or flogging Molly or one of those type bands. Didn't realize it was pennywise till it came up on sxm once.

I like brohym too, have it on a workout playlist.
Punk music is underrated as workout music. Put Social Distortion's version of Under My Thumb, some Fear, some Offspring and some Minor Threat on the tunes and you will break your personal best in whatever it is you're doing.
