The guy has been a (fairly)big name in Hollywood, spanning decades now.

In his prime in the right roles he was fantastic. Saturday Night Fever, Pulp Fiction, Urban Cowboy. He has a swagger and coolness that very few can pull off as authentic.
Most of his other roles I never was blown away by and he just seems miscast to me.
I think his swagger and coolness really showed in Get Shorty.bonfarr said:

He is a barely passable actor who has a lot of charisma that makes the parts he plays entertaining to watch.

He had some iconic roles.
Someone needs to explain Scientology to me and how they all have these careers.

Which is a more iconic signature move -- Travolta's dancing, Cruise's running or Pacino's unnecessarily raised voice?

This.
Between Welcome Back Kotter, Grease, Urban Cowboy, and Saturday Night Fever all in a short time, he was huge. And these are movies that affected pop culture at the time.
He's talented. I just don't know what role is right for him now.
