Genesis has always been one of my favorites.....anything before We Can't Dance is gold......still consider "Supper's Ready" to be the greatest prog rock song of all time, followed by "And You and I" by Yes.....

have to admit, i'm a bit sheltered when it comes to King Crimson, but i listened to them on Spotify and heard "Starless" and was blown away....

always liked ELP's popular stuff, but tried to get into their other songs and just couldn't do it....seems they tried too hard to be edgy & eclectic.......

working myself into Camel and Spock's Beard.........

any favorite bands? any favorite songs or albums?

I've been a big Genesis fan ever since the release of their 1980 album, Duke. Before that, I really didn't understand any of their work. Too artsy, too intellectual. It was on Duke where Phil Collins' presence became more apparent. I think Invisible Touch was the group's undisputed masterpiece. It's an epic meditation on intangibility. At the same time, it deepens and enriches the meaning of the preceding three albums.

Listen to the brilliant ensemble playing of Banks, Collins and Rutherford. You can practically hear every nuance of every instrument. In terms of lyrical craftsmanship, the sheer songwriting, this album hits a new peak of professionalism.

Take the lyrics to Land of Confusion. In this song, Phil Collins addresses the problems of abusive political authority. In Too Deep is the most moving pop song of the 1980s, about monogamy and commitment. The song is extremely uplifting. Their lyrics are as positive and affirmative as anything I've heard in rock.

Phil Collins' solo career seems to be more commercial and therefore more satisfying, in a narrower way. Especially songs like In the Air Tonight and Against All Odds. But I also think Phil Collins works best within the confines of the group, than as a solo artist, and I stress the word artist.

I read Collins' biography. He had ALOT of women problems ( mostly his fault), but they made for some great lyrics. Dude is seriously aware of how omnipresent he was in the 80s, and how there was a backlash against him later on.

The part where he talks about how he ended up being the co-drummer for Zeppelin at Live Aid is particularly interesting.

I think a case could be made that Rush was more proggy from 2112 up to Moving Pictures. After Pictures, they pretty much stopped doing longer, proggy songs.

For me, I'd slide the timelines one album earlier (all within the 80's decade): Permanent Waves thru Presto. Their styles shifted before and after those times. I think Lifeson's guitar playing was the best in the "keyboard/synth era".

I love all of the singles released from the Breakfast in America album, and think Take the Long Way Home is a criminally underrated song.

I really don't know enough about progressive rock to know where Supertramp rates in general though.

Back in early 90s when KTSR moved to Rock, they would have intros like "KTSR!! THE HOME OF ROCK N ROLL" and then Sussusidio would start playing

A lot of great ones mentioned already but I've always loved Kansas albums from their debut through Leftoverture.

I feel like The Pinnacle from their Masque album is their greatest piece.

Good to see a thread about progressive rock. It's not for everyone but some it is pretty cool to listen to.

I certainly concur on this.

I started off with Supertramp "Breakfast In America" when it came out and was hooked by Genesis with "Abacab." I had heard their singles on the radio but that album started a deep dive into their discography. I began working backwards and would add the new as it was released. From there I branched into Yes but not to the same degree.

Saw Genesis, and solo Collins and Gabriel several times in the 80's. Haven't been to a concert in over 30 years but saw that Steve Hackett is on tour performing the entire "Foxtrot" album including "Supper's Ready" so I picked up tickets. To hear the "As Sure as Eggs is Eggs" section performed live will be worth the price of admission for me.

I may be more partial to the pre-GH era, as much as I love what he did with the band. The three album sequence of In Absentia/Deadwing/Fear of a Blank Planet is amazing.

But so is the earlier stretch from Sky Moves Sideways to Lightbulb Sun.

Hell, I like basically everything they put out, maybe with the exception of The Incident. That was undercooked and not that interesting to me.

I get that. "Last Chance to Evacuate…" is one of my favorites by PT, and Stupid Dream is all great.

Kansas still brings it live. I saw them 2 years ago and was blown away.

I so agree with all of this. Duke is a masterpiece prog rock album from start to finish, and easily my favorite Genesis album. Abacab runs a close second, followed by Invisible Touch.
