About 5-10 seconds of the #1 song for every month from January 1980 up through the end of 2022. Have it on to help me stay awake writing a data book tonight. Crazy how popular Olivia Newton-John was in the early 1980s.

Love this. Thanks for sharing. I haven't watched the whole thing yet, but ''84 and '87 are packed with bangers. And Madonna makes a ton of appearances. I would bet she's the most frequent. Are there any that are #1 for consecutive months?

You know, I figure there probably were, but I couldn't split my attention enough to know for sure. I don't know the science, but if you click the guy's page he has a ton of similar type videos, like all the #1 hits of a certain decade.

Madonna keeps showing up time and again, ditto MJ, Britney, Taylor, and Katy Perry as you go on. Flo Rida had a pretty impressive range as well.

I just finished the whole thing and it really was a blast to watch. It's funny watching the surges of hip hop come in , then a push back to rock; then the surge of boy bands, and the push back again.

Glad you enjoyed it.

Very cool. Fortunately I only had to kill 11 minutes and 50 seconds, since that's when the video was through the 80s.

1980-1983: The ride is spectacular bordering on erotic.

1984-1987: The ride, while really good, starts to trail off a bit at the end.

1988-2022: Bits and pieces of good music within the fray. But mostly a downer when compared to the predecessor periods. Here, there is a noticeable emphasis on studio manipulation of vocals and a devaluing of instruments played by humans.

Up through about 1988, I probably had about 90% of these on vinyl or cassette, thanks to Columbia House.

Wow! What a trip down memory lane. Definitely time traveled back to that era (was born 1973). Thanks for sharing

This is awesome. I forgot how much of a banger "Remember the Time" by Michael Jackson was.

That provided a good timeline of when my interest in current popular music dwindled and eventually died. I was good through about 2000, then the songs became more sporadic until there were about 5 in a row in around 2010 that I had never even heard before unless it was in a movie.

This also provided time proof of when Madonna, MJ, Brittney started to suck.

Mariah Carey was prominent on this and had a ton of staying power.

Beyonce has always sucked, IMO.

She was definitely a contender for hottest on the video, especially for old-school, along with Susanna Hoffs and Belinda Carlisle.

Also, I nominate Black Eyed Peas as the worst artist of that whole playlist, and "I'm so 3008, you're so 2000 and late" as the worst lyric of all time.

Do you think some of these aging pop stars (Mariah, Madonna), look at the exposure the new ones get with today's technology and get bitter?

Born in 76, I can remember vivid locations of different houses and rooms I watched most of the videos until the mid 90s or so. Didn't have a tv when I moved to A&M, and mtv was beginning to pivot.

Come on, man. If you're gonna drag BEP, you gotta go with their lyrical masterpiece "I Gotta Feelin'". They literally list the days of the week (all seven!) at one point. The line you quoted is poetic genius in comparison.

Hot women that can sing will always sell...

Forgot how big of a star Mariah was/is.

Whitney Houston can f'ing sing. RIP

Early Beyonce is better than right now Beyonce

(not a political comment) I didn't see any recent Black male groups a la Boyz 2 Men, All 4 One, etc. Would be a refreshing change of pace to see a group like that emerge.

Quote:

"I Gotta Feelin'"

[Will.I.am:]
I got a feeling
That tonight's gonna be a good night
That tonight's gonna be a good night
That tonight's gonna be a good, good night
A feeling
That tonight's gonna be a good night
That tonight's gonna be a good night
That tonight's gonna be a good, good night

[Will.I.am & Fergie {will.I.am}:]
{A feeling (Woo-hoo)}
That tonight's gonna be a good night
That tonight's gonna be a good night
That tonight's gonna be a good, good night
{A feeling (Woo-hoo)}
That tonight's gonna be a good night
That tonight's gonna be a good night
That tonight's gonna be a good, good night (Fee-)

Tonight's the night, let's live it up
I got my money, let's spend it up (I feel-)
Go out and smash it like oh my God
Jump off that sofa, let's kick it off (I feel-)
{I know that we'll have a ball}
{If we get down and go out and just lose it all}
I feel {stressed out, I wanna let it go}
Let's go way out, spaced out, and losin' all control

[Will.I.am {Fergie}:]
Fill up my cup, mazel tov
Look at her dancin', just take it off (I feel-)
Let's paint the town, we'll shut it down
Let's burn the roof
{And then we'll do it again} (I feel-)
Let's do it, let's do it, let's do it, let's do it
And do it, and do it, {let's live it up}
And do it, and do it, and do it, do it, do it
Let's do it, let's do it, let's do it

[Will.I.am {Fergie}:]
'Cause I got a feeling (Woo-hoo)
That tonight's gonna be a good night
That tonight's gonna be a good night
That tonight's gonna be a good, good night
A feeling (Woo-hoo)
{That tonight's gonna be a good night}
{That tonight's gonna be a good night}
{That tonight's gonna be a good, good night} (Fee-)

Tonight's the night (Hey)
Let's live it up {Let's live it up}
I got my money (I'm paying)
Let's spend it up (Let's spend it up)
Go out and smash it {Smash it}
Like oh my God (Like oh my God)
Jump off that sofa (Come on), let's kick it off

Fill up my cup {Drank}
Mazel tov (L'chaim)
Look at her dancin' {Move it, move it}, just take it off
Let's paint the town (Paint the town)
We'll shut it down (Shut it down)
Let's burn the roof
{And then we'll do it again}
Let's do it, let's do it, let's do it, let's do it
And do it, and do it, {let's live it up}
And do it, and do it, and do it, do it, do it
Let's do it, let's do it, let's do it, do it, do it, do it

Here we come, here we go, we gotta rock
Easy come, easy go, now we on top
Fill the shot, body rock, rock it don't stop
Round and round, up and down, around the clock
{Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday (Do it)}
{Friday, Saturday, Saturday to Sunday (Do it)}
{Weekend get-get-get with us, you know what we say}
{Party every day, p-p-p-party every day}

[Will.I.am & Fergie {will.I.am}:]
{And I'm feeling (Woo-hoo)}
That tonight's gonna be a good night
That tonight's gonna be a good night
That tonight's gonna be a good, good night
{A feeling (Woo-hoo)}
That tonight's gonna be a good night
That tonight's gonna be a good night
That tonight's gonna be a good, good night

[Will.I.am:]
Woo-hoo

There's a theory the more repetitive a song is the more people like it.

I think they proved the point.

Wow as someone who bought their first stereo and started buying records in mid 1979 this is just a total nostalgia trip.

My high school years were 80-84 and undergrad and grad school were 84-90. Pretty much tuned out of popular music after that. But what a run that was especially Madonna and MJ of course.

I was thinking about Taylor Swift the other day and how big she is - and I think it is just blown up by social media. There is no way she or Beyonce are bigger than Madonna or MJ were then.

Umm Taylor is still doing shows on the most successful tour of all time. I don't know her music but how this tour was conducted is amazing.

Agreed. She sold out every football stadium in the US multiple nights AND couldn't meet demand.

It ain't hype.

I can't think of any one else who could do that.

Sure. Tours in general have gotten bigger and bigger over the years. there is quite frankly a much bigger audience. The world population is BILLIONS more than it was 40 years ago. The Us population is 100M+ more than in 1984.

That doesn't make them bigger in my eyes. Like as a percentage of the people that are or were fans I think it was more then. And considering the world they operated in with MTV being the only real way to reach fans outside of radio at the time (and tours) compared to the web and social media now.

It's like The Beatles and Elvis. I don't think any of them or even MJ and Madonna compare to them in that day. They were HUGE without any reach beyond some movies and limited use of TV at all. It was a new thing then. And in 1954 or 1964 we are talking about a Us population that was half of what it is now. Tours were slower and venues were smaller.

It's not a slam - they are the biggest artists of today no doubt about it. I just think the fandom was bigger back then as far as what percentage they got of the airtime on both TV and radio. It was more saturated then. You could not escape MJ and Madonna (or the Beatles and Elvis) whereas I think many people (most probably) don't ever really listen to Taylor or Beyonce. You can be selective yourself these days and never see them perform or listen to their music. Although it is not possible to escape knowing who they are I don't think as many people in terms of percentage are familiar with their music or listen to them or would call themselves fans.

And MJ and Madonna had as many if not more number one hits, etc. I'm sure Tsylor and Beyonce are not done and their careers started very young so they may have more #1 and top 10 hits longterm.
