Wow as someone who bought their first stereo and started buying records in mid 1979 this is just a total nostalgia trip.

My high school years were 80-84 and undergrad and grad school were 84-90. Pretty much tuned out of popular music after that. But what a run that was especially Madonna and MJ of course.

I was thinking about Taylor Swift the other day and how big she is - and I think it is just blown up by social media. There is no way she or Beyonce are bigger than Madonna or MJ were then.

Totally agree. Artists of the 80s, e.g., MJ and Madonna, reached global fame without the internet and/or social media. Just imagine the financial heights (they were already extremely wealthy) they would have reached with social media? Likely increase their net worth by 5-10 times.

On the contrary, there weren't as many options to find your preferred entertainment or music. Madonna and MJ were everywhere, but everywhere was smaller.

agreed.

The reason Ed Sullivan was such a big deal is because there were 3 networks to choose from.

If you had a TV, chances are you were watching whoever was on Sullivan that night.

You had a few pop radio stations to listen to, which were generally playing whatever the major labels were promoting.

Later you had MTV, which had the same dynamic.

Now there are infinite ways to get content/entertainment.

I would argue becoming a consensus and long-standing pop star in this environment is more impressive than the "heyday of pop"

The overall number of people owning tvs and mobile devices significantly outmeasures those owning tvs in the 70s and 80s. That explains why the endorsement value of modern day entertainers and athletes significantly outweighs those of the 70s and 80s.

Oh that's definitely the worst song. In agreement.
I bet that has been more of a guilty ear worm for people than Batdance. Obviously Price earned great latitude, but that stood out as exceptionally bad, especially for the time period.

The most bizarre part of the entire video is suddenly remembering that Michael Douglas, Kathleen Turner, and Danny Devito were in the video for "When the Going Gets Tough" by Billy Ocean because of Jewel of the Nile.

If you are a glutton for punishment, every Billboard #1 since the beginning. I'm far more likely to recognize the songs from the '50s and '60s than those of the last 15 to 20 years. Yes I is old.

And every #1 Album since August 1963

First one has some gaps in it. Must be copyright violations I guess.

They had a fantastic run -- Romancing the Stone, Jewel of the Nile and the best of all -- The Wart of the Roses.
