One of the best blends of acoustic and electric is Boston's Long Time. The acoustic intro / clapping to the chorus is great, and then replacing it with electric on the final verse is magical.

I think there was a "best rock song ever" thread and I had forgotten about this one. Heard it the other day with my kids in the truck and broke the knob off as we jammed down the freeway.

are you seriously asking if Jar of Flies is any good?

Alice in Chains Unplugged album is absolutely excellent.

I also stumbled across a video on YouTube of AIC doing "I Stay Away" with Seattle's Northwest Symphony in 2007. Sure, it's not Lane Staley, but it's outstanding.

Loved this album. Thought these guys were going to be much bigger. Classic acoustic rock sound.

Lead singer got hooked on meth. Ended up living on the street. One of the A&E "Intervention" episodes focused on him

That's a shame. Figured it had to be something of the sort. Just fell off the map.

Forgot about that band. Saw them at the Howling Wolf in NOLA in 98 or so. They did have a distinct sound.

still no other rock band I know that had full albums entirely acoustic and tuned to drop C#.

Saw them open for metallica in late 90s (with jerry cantrell).

Dude was like 19 yrs old living the dream.

Yeah the entire AIC Unplugged is incredible but their performance of Nutshell is a masterpiece.

The way Staley just casually walks out, sits down, and absolutely nails it is almost gut wrenching.

So good

I don't think there is a real acoustic rock era, but acoustic rock has always existed as a shadow form of rock music. There are the obvious references like Bob Dylan and Simon and Garfunkel, but I like the one-offs like "Patience" and "Every Rose has its Thorn". Zeppelin has "Over the Hills and Far Away" which turns electric, and Kansas had "Dust in the Wind". I'll give Guns n Roses credit for inspiring "MTV Unplugged" and Tesla's "Five Man Acoustic Jam" album. A few years later Alice In Chains and Nirvana put their chill acoustic albums out. Are these songs and albums any good or are they just rockers trying to prove their musicianship? Personally I like them because they put focus on the vocals and song instead of speed and volume.

Have you heard of Billy Strings?

This is my favorite acoustic performance ever.

With that said Eric Clapton's MTV unplugged is my favorite acoustic album of all time.

What makes it even more eery is the interview with Jerry that said they were so worried about Layne's state that they weren't sure if he was going to come out and what state he would be in, and how he would sound (no practice). So to see him nail it was sends chivers. You can see Jerry's smirk after he starts seeing thinking "hell yea!".

Right! No way he has really listened to it then. Masterpiece!

Yup.

Knowing what he was going through at this time makes it all the more chilling.

Like I said that entire set was amazing and you could honestly pick any song to post on this thread, but that one being the opening song and how moving it is just set the tone so perfectly.

This is for a another thread all together but for me Staley has to be one of the top 5 rock vocalists.

We should have a rock vocalists thread for sure. And he is definitely on the Mount Rushmore of that category!

To me is automatically starts with Chris Cornell and Layne Staley. Have to think on 3 and 4.

I put Freddie M above both, but that's not a knock against either.

That is completely fair.

I'm not a big Queen fan, and some times I wasn't crazy about the tone, but that is just my subjectivity and agree he is an amazing singer and probably one of the best of all time. There are times he blows me away.

It'd be hard (but fun to do the top 4). What makes it hard is what to base it on, technically?, personal preference? Rock type?. Technically Layne is up there (and top for me no matter the category), Ronny James Dio, Rob Halford, Morrissey are consideration. But Robert Smith and Kurt Cobain would be top considerations for me personally (albeit I can see where others could easily argue against). Some would probably put Axle Rose in there (I wouldnt though). Mick Jagger could be in the convo. Need to think on this one….

I would definitely say my top two no question would be Layne and MJK. Other two would be tough…..

'Greatest singer' is never going to appease everyone.

Are you looking for accuracy, note range, style range, tone, feeling, warmth, adaptability, stamina, on and on and on.

You have to define what you're looking for. Then you can narrow down contenders in that arena.

I mean how many people can do what Mikael akerfeltd does? A heart warming, soothing, beautiful tone followed by a brutal face melting death growl?

Freddie can't.. or Chris, Layne, Ronnie or well barely anyone. He's in a league of his own.

Or someone like Devin Townsend. Pitch perfect operatic powerful presence vocal, followed by a pitch perfect fry scream on a high E. Not many people can do that. But is he the best?

It's a discussion that has no end.

That's why I mentioned Staley as one of the best rock vocalists.

A lot of rock is not vocally appealing and tons of great front men were not good vocally.

It's pretty easy to narrow it down when talking about rock vocalists.
