Daughter has a record player. Where should I be looking for Vinyl online or Houston? It would be stuff like Lumineers, Avett, Hozier, etc.

Hate to say it but Amazon is actually a good option. Especially if you aren't looking for something limited or hard to find.

I don't live in Houston but I'm sure you could find a great local record shop as well. You'll probably pay about $5 more per album than Amazon… but spending a few hours flipping through records is hard to beat.

A lot of the fun is going digging in your local stores. Then again, if she's only listening to new stuff it's not the same. The kids of a couple close friends are into vinyl and they often ask me to take them to the record store even though they can drive themselves there. I love seeing them have 5 albums in their hands with only enough to buy 2 or 3. I know that struggle all too well.

Cactus Music is always a fun browse. They have a lot of new stuff as well as a lot of old stuff.

Your first two stops should be Cactus Records in Greenway Plaza and Half Price Books. Get yourself some $0.99 Oak Ridge Boys, Tom Jones, and Juice Newton albums. Maybe spend $4 or $5 on some lesser known ZZ Top or Eagles records. Doesn't really matter, because you'll only listen to them once.

When you can't find the groups your daughter wants, then go home and hit Amazon up. Then watch the albums and record player gather dust until the 2044 garage sale season, as your appreciation for iPhones and Bluetooth speakers renews.

Hey, the good thing is spending some quality time with your daughter and introducing her to some good tunes. Keep it up.

Record hunting's a fun pastime, even if it's for three terrible bands.

Aside from local record shops, try Half Price Books, Amazon, eBay, Target/Walmart, antique stores, garage sales, etc. Best of luck on your search.

Thrift stores like Goodwill and Salvation Army are gold mines for records.

Agree with most of the recommendations here. Find antique stores or antique malls. Many of the vendors will have records and most are priced to sell. You won't find much new stuff there but for old vinyl it is the way to go.

My daughter and I collect vinyl and sports cards and just love the hunt. I have a list of vinyl that I want and look for original recordings. I'll buy remasters and reissues for the short term but still hunt for original vinyl. It's a lot of fun, especially with your kids.

Both my dad and I have really started (or in his case, re-started) our vinyl record collections over the past few years, and there are a number of great vinyl stores around town that you can check out that we go to regularly. Agreed with others that a lot of the fun is in the hunt, and I think it's always more fun coming across a great find in a store.

Inside the loop, Cactus Records is a very good place to visit, as mentioned above. Definitely the largest shop in town with the widest selection; they also have a stage with live music on occasion which is fun. I've found a lot of good stuff there. Not just records, they also have a CD selection and other music-related merch.

Sig's Lagoon is another good stop in the vicinity of downtown. My dad in particular likes that shop in terms of classic records, but they also have a solid modern selection. Maybe the second largest shop in town.

I also like Vinal Edge in the Heights (yes, that's spelled like that intentionally). A bit more hipster-y as you would expect in the Heights, but I've also made some great finds there and they've got a nice selection too that's a bit different and unique from the above two.

Finally, if you're up in the Spring/Woodlands area, Volume Music is a great shop. Good general selection and a great family owned & run business. It's the closest shop to me so I actually do a lot of ordering through their online store (when I cannot find records I want in store anywhere else) with their in-store pickup option, so I don't have to worry as much about records getting damaged by UPS or melting in the heat during the summer.

Agree with all of this. I really like Vinal Edge - it's hit and miss sometimes. But when it's on, I walk out with 5+ records I couldn't pass up.

Record Store Day is April 20. If any of the local Houston shops mentioned are like Josey Records and Good Records in Dallas it should be a fun outing for the OP and his daughter to get some special releases or just enjoy the music and atmosphere

I usually order Amazon for generic stuff, for indie exclusive variants I usually order from Amoeba because they have free shipping.

I will saw Amazon used to pack their vinyls a lot better and lately just throw them in a box where they can slide around and get damaged. I've returned a couple because of dents in the sleeves.

When we lived in LA, Amoeba Records was the go to for new and used vinyl.

Got my 25 y/o daughter a record player and she's had a great time going to garage sales and thrift shops.

She's been buying stuff based on artwork too. She told me she bought a Styx record at a garage sale because she liked the artwork. It's a great discovery for kids who came up on Kanye West and Taylor Swift.

The most fun I get from vinyls is the hunt. Just going to Amazon and ordering some just isn't fun for me.

I always see great albums at antique stores. Of course, you won't find Taylor Swift but you might stumble across a near-mint Jackson Browne.

For some reason, people bought the **** out of Alan Parsons in the 1970s and no one wants to buy them.

Maybe I see a ton because my first go to section is always the P.

what's a decent budget for a player?

The player I have is what my wife had as a child, so I'm afraid to even hook it up and be discouraged.
It's a pioneer PL-990

I have started getting some vinyl with deluxe box sets, plus some old 60s/70s my wife has hung onto from her mom.

Thanks for all the feedback. Gonna take her to Cactus this weekend. More about time spent than ease of shopping.

Decent is relative. I'm no audiophile so I don't need super expensive.

My first turntable a few years ago was an all-in-one that also played AM/FM radio, CDs, cassettes, and Bluetooth. It dragged and skipped and was just poor quality for vinyl.

Last year, I upgraded to Audio Technica ATLP120XBT for under $300. It hasn't skipped, except on scratches, doesn't drag, and sounds great. I connect via Bluetooth to the TV soundbar.

Again, I'm not an audiophile so you'll probably want something much better if you are.

Audio Technica LP60 is my rec. 120 is a step up and the one I finally landed on. Both are great, but the 120 sounds a touch better and is more customizable. I pair them with the Edifer bookshelf speakers which I've found to be the best bang for the buck. No pre amp needed either.

The LP60 and Edifer speakers would run you about $250. Upgrade to the 120 and you're looking at about $400.

I had the Edifier speakers as well and they worked and sounded great but I get a really good sound from the soundbar and sub-woofer.

Record convention in Pasadena on weekend of March 16th. I go to the Austin Record Convention every other year. It's a lot of fun and get to see things you never see. I'm a vinyl nerd so I love everything vinyl. Discogs is an app to be part of a vinyl community. There's always someone selling what your looking for, at a reasonable price.
