When folks started using them I think they were added to help find "The Official Thread of fill in the blank here" but now that so many threads have them it sorta defeats the purpose. Now it is just convention to do so for such threads on this board.

I've always disliked the asterisks. It makes no sense, and we are smarter than that. When one person does it, it works. When everyone does it, it's meaningless.
