Getting this started

I made it into the second episode last night. It's a tough watch so far. Never read any of the books so I have no point of reference for what this is supposed to be so I'm judging only the show. I'm struggling to find any redeeming qualities at the moment. It's pretty boring and the acting is bad IMO. I might wait to hear from people who watch the whole thing to figure out if it's worth going any further.

It's been a rollercoaster. I haven't read the books either but heard the books were good so was interested. Then saw the showrunners and lost interest. Trailers seemed ok and I love almost any halfway decent scifi so I got pulled back in. Now the early response to the show has me looking for something else to jump into.

The trilogy of books as a whole are fantastic. The first book is pretty weird, so i get that you guys don't care for it so far. I haven't started the show yet, but I'll be trying soon.

I'm bingeing the episodes this weekend and have just 1 left. I am about a quarter of the way through the first book. Even so, I've found the series to be pretty easy to get through. Give it an 8 out of 10 I think.

Im three episodes in and I think it's pretty good.

Going to read the books before watching. Have had them on my to read list for awhile.

This is good to know. I heard such great things about the books, but I was not impressed with the first book at all. I thought the story was an interesting concept, but I found the writing itself (prose, pacing, character development, etc.) to be very meh. I chalked it up partly to the translation from Chinese to English, but it did not leave me wanting to read the next book. Maybe I'll go ahead and give the second book a shot.

First book is very "Chinese" i think. All the cultural references are Chinese vs western so they don't do much for us. The second book is where I thought it really got good. Hopefully you'll agree if you give it a go.

That opening sequence of the show during the cultural revolution was a stunning piece. Was surprised with the beating and then remembered who was doing this show

It really kicks into gear episode 5-6 when a bunch of stuff about the aliens is revealed.

The opening immediately drew me in.

However I stopped after 12 minutes when the female entrepreneurial Mensas are hit on by the dumb white guy.

I guess many here might scoff at that given the 12 pages of ridiculous arguing y'all have going on here, but it is my contention that that inane scene occurring within the first 15 minutes informs me of the show's trite adaptation of books I never read.

I'll second this one. Book 2/Book 3 and the unofficial/official sequel are some of the best mind bending sci-fi that has come lately.

Hadn't even heard of that fourth book. It was worth reading?

It clearly isn't as good as the first three and it started as a fan fiction. I kinda treated as a "what if" explanation of what could be happening.

Other people really hated it.

I have a pretty good tolerance for fan-fic-y/own head canon fiction, so I enjoyed it okay. It isn't must read/nor may it be worth reading, but it was more narrative with the characters which I enjoyed.

I think the test is this, if you finished book 3 and thought the story was complete. Then skip it. If you finished book 3 and wanted more, then read it. You just may not like the more.

Through episode 3 and loving it

Not a great finale. Definitely setting up the next season.
I thought the first few episodes were weak and had to introduce to many characters, timelines, and plot. The middle few episodes were great. But the finale wasn't as strong as the previous episodes.
