Heard this on the radio and had to look.

This seems too soon.

Sounds like a Disney go project. Has to be a multi ethnic actress that can do a Keith Richards impression

written by "Birds of Prey" scribe Christina Hodson, had been dropped, adding, "We had an idea and we were developing it for a while, ages ago, to have more of a female-led not totally female-led, but just a different kind of story

It's been over 20 years. Spider-Man and Incredible Hulk would be rebooted four times in that amount of time.

It's not 20 years since the last movie

I wouldn't mind a female lead, Black Sails showed how to properly create a female badass pirate. If it turned into a Charlize Theron Atomic Blonde type though, I'll quickly check out.

Anne bonny and Mary read were real pirates so making a story about her shouldn't be too hard considering there is real history to pull from. Disney doesn't get the benefit of the doubt, but the source to pull from is there for a compelling character and story.

Not sure if many of you read the article.

The reboot script led by Birds of Prey writer and Margot Robbie was dropped.

They are running with a script from one of the lead writers from the first four Pirates movies.

Not bothering with reading because for a lot of people it's not going to matter for 2 big reasons….

1. No Johnny Depp

2. Disneys treatment of Johnny Depp with the Amber Heard crap and he publicly stating he'd never go back to Disney

This'll be a hard sell…..

Now….could it be successful? Sure it could….but given the recent track record of Disney Ima take the under on this just like everything else….

Several years ago Margot Robbie was the rumored lead.

A few tidbits/clarifications. Granted, this info is a few months old, and things could always change, but it's from a friend involved with the movie…

- It's not a full-on reboot. It's all new characters, but does indeed take place in the same universe/timeline as the other movies.

- This very purposefully leaves the door open for Depp to potentially return at some point, which is the plan. Despite what he said publicly in 2022, Depp is willing to come back, but if/when he does it'll be in a limited capacity. Possibly at the end of this one, but more likely in the next one.

- Black female lead. This is the Caribbean, after all.

- There's a certain director who is surprisingly gung-ho to direct this, who has been in talks. I can't say who it is, and I have no idea if it's still happening, but if it does this movie could genuinely go so hard and be a ton of fun.

I liked Atomic Blonde. Granted I watched it on an airplane so standards are much lower. I kinda thought it was good standard for "tough action woman" What is the issue? Not trying to argue, just curious.

They should bring back Zoe Saldana from the first one as the lead.

It was entertaining, but a female John Wick beating the crap out of trained mercenaries double her size was a bit dumb.

This is definitely a post for the politics board, but it'll be interesting to see what sort of cast they go with for something like this. Bob Iger had made comments recently that imply they are going to step back on DEI. I don't remember the exact quote, but it was something like, "We we've been focused to much of making am impact and not enough on just being entertaining." I don't follow the industry super close, but I don't remember any major announcements at the level of something like Pirates since he came back. Everything coming out now was in production before he took back over. It'll be interesting to see if he really does reduce the amount of DEI.

Regardless, this movie is going to fail unless Johnny is in it. It's going to be very hard to do a Pirates movie without Jack Sparrow, and no one is going to want to try to take that role.

They'll tease jack for 1 scene in the trailer and he will be a full on character again in the 2nd one and tiger will count your money again

Again, I was told they're going with a black female lead, but casting a black female lead doesn't necessarily mean it's automatically part of some "DEI" hire/initiative.

Not only can that be a problematic precedent to set, if we start labeling/assuming every non-white person who is cast as the lead in a major blockbuster franchise is part of some "DEI" agenda, but you also have to look at it in contrast to the first five movies and not necessarily in contrast to what Iger has said. All five Pirates movies have featured white leads and white love interests, save for Penelope Cruz in the fourth movie, so maybe it's simply time to mix it up creatively and focus not on predominantly white British characters yet again, and instead let the main character be someone who's actually native to region, and of the predominant race of the region.

All that said, again, things could have changed between when I was told this info and now. That, and despite the white leads, the Pirates movies - at least the sequels - have already been pretty diverse, so outside of going with a different race for the lead I don't know how much more Disney can potentially force things in that regard.

You nailed the major problems with AA and dei and the like. It leads to people assuming that others only achieved their position through those types of programs, and for a lot of people, it absolutely is true. Who those things really hurt are the hard working folks that actually earn their position instead of it being handed to them through some sort of initiative. If I was one of those that earned it, I would be so furious at the programs that led to others perceiving my accomplishments as anything but. It is a very unfortunate unintended consequence.

I didn't mean to imply they had to put a white male character as the lead. As you suggested earlier, a black female lead makes sense because of the Caribbean. It also makes sense because Zoe Saldana has been been given her own ship in previous movies. She could absolutely be the lead without any questions. It doesn't necessarily have to her, either. It's certainly possible that the story specifically requires a black female lead, especially in the Pirates universe.

I really should have said it will be interesting to see what the casting announcement is like. If in the announcement they say, "We are proud to have our first transgender, black female captain, and our first queer Asian first mate, and will include the first gay love scene between a human and a squid..." Then nothing has really changed.

Yeah, there have been some bad female action setups in recent years. Atomic Blonde was not one of them. You're not going to hear me complain about a gun-fu mystery set during the Cold War.

Nope. Gunn is running/directing for DC through at least the end of the decade, if not longer. Maybe he does another non-DC passion project or two here and there, but if so it'll be through Warner Bros and not Disney.
