Who do you guys think are underrated guitarists. I was watching music videos, and a couple of live Tenacious D songs came on. I feel that Kyle Gass is underrated as a guitarist. I'm a hard rock and metal guy, but Gass is really good.

Geez. A lot.

Alex Lifeson of Rush. Can do it all.

Believe it or not, Willie Nelson. I've seen clips of him soloing that really surprised me.

Randy Jackson of Zebra

Ty Tabor of King's X

Several country players

I'm not much of a country music guy, but when I think of great guitarists in that genre, it's Vince Gill, Keith Urban and Brad Paisley.

I might get roasted for this, but Dave Matthews is an incredibly underrated guitarist. He's not a lead guy, but the way he constructs his chord shapes in his melodies gives me hand cramps just watching him.

When I was in high school i used to get so frustrated trying to play the opening riff of Lay it Down with that next to impossible pinky stretch.

A couple that come to mind:

Mike Campbell
Elliot Easton

Neither are flashy or would be considered virtuosos, but they had good chops and always played exactly what the song needed.

Underrated is difficult to define. Who is the one underrating?

If you know stuff, Prince is not underrated- he's probably an all time top 25, a top 10 of the last 25 years. A lot of folks might say "who's that?" to Adam Jones... my neighbor would have no idea who Mark Knoffler is.

But I'll play- I submit Brad Whitford, Aerosmith.

Stevie Ray Vaughan. I know, I know… even though he's arguably ranked as the greatest of all time, he is still underrated. He was that good.

Besides him, I'll mention Ian Moore. He's no SRV, but his playing can make you cry.

I think we have some confusion on underrated and under-publicized or recognized.

There was a time I think Prince would have fit underrated, but it seems like people have rediscovered him since his death, to the point now, he's getting close to overrated. I've seen people claim him to be the greatest ever. Most of them are random YouTubers, and their ranking is almost entirely based of the, "While My Guitar Gently Weeps" video. I think reasonable people would put him in their Top 25, which is a fair ranking for him. Definitely not underrated anymore.

Yeah, I was thinking "Glen Campbell" but he was extremely highly regarded by everyone with an inkling. It's just that most folks had no inkling and just recognized him as "the Rhinestone Cowboy singer." Still, he should be on more lists.

Van Halen have one hit too many to rank as underrated ?

That said - casual listeners wouldn't know that Rivers Cuomo from Weezer is a closet guitar hero.

A newer Vince Gill but does Brad Paisley count? I don't listen to country so I have no idea if the average fan recognizes his greatness.

Hair metal/glam got all the praise, but Chris DeGarmo from Queensryche was phenomenal. Note choice, phrasing, etc. it is often subtle until you try to play some of his lead work then "holy F that is difficult!"

I second Dave Matthews. Crazy creative stuff. I'll even add Tim Reynolds. I had listened to early DMB for 20 years before I realized how much Tim is playing. I thought of him only in their acoustic duo.

Don't know where Roy Clark is on the list. Him playing Malagueña is impressive. Actually, him playing anything with strings was impressive.

Chris DeGarmo is one of my favs for sure. Great guitarist and even better song writer, plus he sounded great on backing vocals harmonizing w/ Geoff. The band went down hill fast after he left to become a pilot. I'm just glad I got to see him play a few times.

I feel like when people are asked about Nuno specifically they fawn over him, but when listing greats his name is rarely mentioned. The solo on their song "Rise" they released last year was killer

Mike Campbell - he's easily top 20 for me close to top 10, has some instantly recognizable riffs

Lindsey Buckingham - so talented in creating little "ditties" i would call them with his fingering/strumming style. creative and perfection for the songs but not overbearing at all

Schon immediately came to mind for me. He is arguably my

Tommy Tedesco.

Who? He played with The Wrecking Crew, the legendary group of session players who played on most of the great recordings in the 60s, but usually weren't credited on the albums. That cat could play anything, usually on the first take.

Glen Campbell also played with that group before he began his solo career.
