Love following threads. Not so much reading why so and so was disappointing because it didn't match the book, or dealing with possible spoilers.

Figured I'd make a thread in case anyone is in my boat after trying to read the other thread following episode 1 of season 2. Don't care who posts here so long as you keep the book talk to the other thread.

How does HOTD rank against other HBO originals? I haven't given it a chance

It's as good as GoT was at its peak.

I enjoy it just as much, and the reviews seem to back that up as well. Agree to disagree.

Haven't watched new season yet, but I agree with this. Season one was better than the last three seasons of GOT.

It was good, but let's not get carried away.
I haven't seen any characters that come close to the greatness that were Tyrion, Bronn, Littlefinger, Varys etc. Other memorable characters with lesser parts such as Gregor Clegane, The Hound, Davos, Tywin Lannister don't have equals in HOTD. The depth of cast/characters isn't there yet.

It's a little limited in scope/setting at this point as well, hopefully the chess board expands to other areas we haven't seen. (I'm sure it will).

Bronn was a nothing character.

I put Rhaenyra right up there with Danaerys, and Daemon with all those you mentioned except for Tyrion.

But this show is only a season in so it's unfair to compare. And it's not like we'll have 8 seasons and almost 10 years with them.

But the writing, acting, and everything else about it is just as good as those early GoT seasons.

I think the spectacle as a whole is still top notch I just think it's lacking in any characters I really care about. The time jumps and the general lack of anyone likable compared to the original puts it a step behind in my book. We had a slew of characters to cheer for in the original and this is really well done but just not attached to anyone for some reason.

But he was a memorable nothing character with attitude & great one liners, which is more that I can say for any of the HOTD nothing characters. His exchanges with Tyrion were hilarious.

It struck me last night - the thing the GoT had that this series doesn't is a sense of humor. A bit of levity now and then is needed IMO.

The obvious lack of gratuitous nudity compared to GOT is a big difference too. You can decide if that's positive or negative.

I guess that depends on if we're talking Melisandre with the red jewel necklace on or off.
