My daughter and I are almost done reading The lion the witch and the wardrobe. She asked if we could watch the movie when we were done. As a kid on PBS they played the BBC series that adapted the first 4 books. On a whim tonight I googled "lion witch wardrobe bbc" and someone has the whole series up on YouTube.



It's delightful in its late 80s bbc nostalgia. I can't remember if I ever saw the ones that were done in the early 2000s. The new ones are on Disney+ but I'd like to share with her the characters I was introduced to.

Shame they didn't finish the series but it looks like Netix is maybe going to take a Crack at it.

The new ones were actually pretty good.

I'm wary of Netflix taking on a project full of Christian themes.

I think the Disney version of The Lion, The Witch, and the Wardrobe is a fantastic adaptation. Highly recommend checking it out, next. They stick to the book so well and anything they added I thought was also well thought out.

Unfortunately, I thought they completely veered away from the book too much in Prince Caspian. Added a bunch of conflicts that seemed stupid. Was not a fan of that adaptation.

The Voyage of the Dawn Treader I felt was much better and back on point, though still not up to the same quality as the first movie.

Really cool going through the series for the first time. It's one I grew up with and it still holds a special place in my heart. For some reason, my favorite book was always the Horse and His Boy.

This was my favorite book growing up. I read it several times, but I don't recall reading any of the others. My daughter was born soon after the Disney movie came out. I bought a box set of all of The Chronicles of Narnia and set out to read them all in order. Then when my daughter was old enough to understand, I read all of them to her, and she loved them. We had the movie on loop for a while as well.

My son and I really wish The Horse and His Boy had a movie made from it. Probably our favorite book of them all.

I would absolutely love a movie adaptation of The Horse and His Boy, done right. I love it so much, but I've heard many say it is one of the weakest of the series, which I've never understood.

ETA: As far as Netflix adapting the books... they better not push some modern BS on these books. If they do, the discussions on this board will make all our previous discussions on Hollywood look tame. You don't eff around with CS Lewis and a beloved series like the Chronicles of Narnia.

It's Netflix. It's 2024. Of course they will make changes because reasons.

To a point, yes. But if they make Aslan some environmental god rather than what anyone who has read the books knows he is supposed to represent, then that's not okay.

I will say that I'm in a really happy place right now with children's lit at bedtime. Narnia with my daughter and Encyclopedia Brown with my son. Just trying to figure out when we can move into Indian in the Cupboard and the Hobbit.

I remember as a kid thinking that Turkish delight had to be the best thing ever. The book made it sound so incredibly good that I absolutely craved it.

I had my first taste of it probably 25 years later and was utterly disappointed when it tasted like a caramel injected with perfume. I felt like Ralphie from A Christmas Story having his "drink more Ovaltine" moment. This revolting concoction was what I'd been waiting years to try?

I later had a homemade version that was palatable, maybe even somewhat enjoyable, but still far from the ambrosia of my imagination.

There's probably a forbidden fruit allegory in there somewhere.

This cartoon from 1979 introduced me to the world of Narnia as a 6-7 year old kid whenever I saw it on TV back around 1980 maybe? It is SO good and as a result led me to read the books. Yes the animation looks very 1970's but the music is awesome and the storyline is true to the books as much as they could put in a short cartoon movie and I still watch this occasionally as an adult.

One item of note I really caught as an adult is in this, when the witch commits her murder on the stone table, all her minions are cheering in sadistic glee beforehand and when the act happens they are all silent and shocked for a second and look on in disbelief at what they have participated in and then resume their giddy celebration which is how I imagine people witnessing Christ's death on the cross must have felt when it affected them in the moment it happened after they had been calling for His death. Just something I have thought about. This cartoon is a great way to introduce your small kids to all of Narnia!

I get the nostalgia of all the old media, but the 2005 movie is by far the best adaptation, imo. It hits every plot point perfectly, the CGI is fantastic for 2005 and still holds up today, the music is fantastic, and the added battle scene is so freaking good for a PG movie.

The non-stop girl power coming out of Hollywood is nauseating and exhausting. They are attempting to right the percieved wrongs of 10000 years of human history by making women ridiculous mirror versions of male heros, which nobody takes seriously. A 120 lb woman girl-bossing a 250 lb man is just too much wishful denial of reality, and you are a raging bigot if you notice and comment on it. Name a male part that some liberated progressive new director hasn't turned into a woman needlessly just to "representation-up" what they consider dated content.
