Which is ironic and hypocritical since he repeatedly bashes people who criticize a movie that they have not yet seen.

And it's also noteworthy since many movies that he praises here are absolute crap. I've learned to use him as a contrary indicator.

It's why I've completely ignored any opinion he's given on movies. I learned my lesson

Shocker that I don't share the same cinematic opinions as "Aggie Dad 26" and "aTmAg," on a Texas-based college football message board. Further, at least I'm not disparaging either of you over your opinions, seeing as I've said multiple times now that I don't fault anyone for getting enjoyment out of/finding satisfaction in watching this kind of thing, as opposed to what you guys are doing here to me. I'm merely saying this kind of thing is not beyond critique simply because it checks certain historical boxes.

Probably just wishful thinking. Judging by their incessant, deep-seeded, years-long hatred of me, a handful of people here would seemingly love nothing more.

Finn described himself as "kind of a big deal".

Sounds familiar.

Actually he just says he's a big deal in the resistance.
I believe you're thinking of Ron Burgundy.

The scene they are calling cringe is an accurate portrayal of something that happened in real life as documented in a book by one of the participants. So there is that.
It's a terribly shot sequence with a soundtrack that's trying to blow your ears out and perfectly capped by an absurdly acted Margaret Thatcher line.

"Well done, Cowboy."

Please show me in my post where I critiqued the movie itself.

Go ahead, I'll wait.

With that out of the way, what I do rail against on this board is when certain people jump to conclusions / ***** and moan about entire movies they haven't yet seen, months before those movies hit theaters, based on limited information, the need to pre-label everything "woke," etc.

Which is not at all what I'm doing here.

I'm simply reacting to the scene in front of me, which is a final product being projected in a movie theater. I'm critiquing this clip, and this clip alone, then using it to make a broader observation about "fan" culture, be it Star Wars, Marvel, or politics. What I'm not doing anywhere in my previous post is using this clip to make any kind of judgement call on the movie as a whole.
And yet you are judging a clip without any context. That's not any better.

Especially when you jump people's asses for criticizing a trailers which also show clips from the finished movie.

I don't need added context to judge that specific clip. Especially considering trailers and clips are very different things, the former often being a feverishly cut sales pitch meant to approximate a tone/vibe, while the latter is an actual filmmaking excerpt from the movie.

Regardless, please explain to me how seeing the rest of the movie will make the acting better in that clip, the cinematography better in that clip, or the other more technical decisions better in that clip. I'm sorry, but no matter how great the rest of the movie may or may not be, no added context can change how terrible-looking, cheesy, and cloying that specific clip is.

The acting is infinitely better than Transformers 55.

Okay? Is that supposed to be a dig? Because I haven't remotely liked a single Transformers movie since 2007, and even that one is pretty bad at times.

I never said I'm not going to watch it, and if for whatever reason I never get around to it, it has absolutely nothing to do with the fact that it's about a Republican president's life. Again, I voted for Bush twice, McCain, and Romney. I have absolutely nothing against - and have, in fact, been for - every Republican presidential candidate I've been eligible to vote for up until Trump. It really is so funny how desperately you guys need me to be your culture war villain.

IMO, the funniest scene was when Brezhnev, Andropov, and Chernenko all died back to back. They showed each at a table where they started coughing, and then it flashed to a extravagant funeral procession with people holding his portrait while they played loud sorrowful Soviet music. It was the same table and exact same funeral clip each time except the portrait they held.

"How can I talk them if they keep dying?"

Back to the movie:

One regrettable decision they made was where they put the "we win, they lose" line. That didn't occur while Reagan was president. That happened in 1977 between his time as governor and president. And I think the actual story is better.

What happened was that Richard Allen was running for office and he wanted Reagan's endorsement because Reagan was obviously popular. Reagan told him that he'd like to meet him since he wasn't going to blindly support somebody merely because they are republican. That he would need to know his positions fist. So Allen went to Reagan's house and sat with him for an hour or so talking about issues. Reagan asked what was his stance on the Soviets. Allen, who had twice been been foreign policy coordinator for Nixon and worked at the Center for Strategic and International Studies and the Hoover Institution prior, talked at length about detente (aka perpetual stalemate) and foreign policy under Nixon (who many considered the greatest foreign policy mind at the time). After he was done, Reagan responded with something to the effect of, "Well my stance is more simple: we win, they lose. What do you think about that?"

They talked about it a bit more, and Allen became an instant convert. He decided right then and there to drop out of his race and to work to get Reagan elected in 1980. After Reagan won, he became Reagan's National Security Advisor.

Watched it last night and we all enjoyed it. Learned a few things. The OP is pretty accurate. They cover a ton of ground and it doesn't get that in depth.

The themes that were stressed were his faith and focus on defeating communism. I don't know what American is butthurt over that, but I thought it was great. Recommending to all my friends now

Just saw it this afternoon. Thought it was great. As a kid of the 80's and a history nerd, I found the movie nostalgic, well acted and really appreciated how it portrayed the relationship between Ronald and Nancy along with his wit and humor.

Highly recommend everyone give this one a shot. Kind of refreshing change of scenery from comic book movies and remakes that seem to dominate Hollywood now days.

Saw it Friday. As a huge Regan fan, I give it a B overall.
  • Subject Matter: A+. It's the first movie to cover this dynamic two-term president who had enormous cultural, economic and geo-political impact.
  • Approach to Subject Matter: A. It was respectful, nostalgic, though admittedly not objective. Which I am fine with.
  • Acting: A-. Quaid was solid. Voight was good. The rest of the cast were forgettable.
  • Character Development: B. Unlike Oppenheimer, First Man, Aviator, Citizen Kane or other great biopics that come to mind, you don't get a deep sense who Reagan was. It's not for a lack of trying, as there are many scenes intended to knit that story, it just didn't seem to land in my opinion. The film relies too much on nostalgia to try to get the audience there.
  • Score: B. Bob Dylan covering Don't Fence Me In was great. Otherwise, meh.
  • Screenwriting: C+. I think they tried to do too much. Instead of tackling 4-6 significant issues/events in his life and administration while weaving a consistent thread throughout, it felt like a hodgepodge of highlight reel moments with a weak narrative device.
  • Cinematography: C. Too many sweeping skyline shots that came off as cheesy.

Wow, just watched it at the movie theatre with the family. Great movie....brought back so many memories. They covered so much ground that they didn't even mention he had any children....neither the great two or the POS two kids.
