Only had to pay $6 on Prime tonight if anyone is interested but still hasn't seen it. Not a lot to add since we agree with all of the comments here.

I thought this movie had a cool premise overall, and had a decent first hour, but thought it devolved in the second half and was unrecognizable by the end.

I also felt that the movie violated its own plot device by having the two leads fight each other towards the end. I was under the impression that it was the same person (which the movie outright says with "there is no she. You are one.") and she was reliving her life as a young person again. I thought she was keeping both sets of memories. They spend this whole time setting up the rule that only one version can be animated at a time then just break the rule by having them both be awake. Didn't make any sense to me.

The acting was solid. The soundtrack was cool, too. Not sure about the message, though. Is it a satire about our throwaway culture and obsession with youth and sex? Then why was the nudity so damn gratuitous? Seems pretty ironic to me. Or is it greedy men in Hollywood bad?

Wow
What the heck?!? Never seen anything like the Substance. More gratuitous nudity from huge stars than I've seen in a movie combined with batsh*t crazy/gross special effects. The last half hour was out there.

This is the kind of movie that would have been huge at early teen slumber parties in the 80s.

Saw it tonight. Wow. Did sort of feel like the last twenty minutes fell apart but I liked it.

Demi Moore held nothing back on this one. Ending is hard to describe

Demi is making huge strides in the Oscar race. She's gained a ton of steam after the GG win.

GoldDerby now has her in the #2 spot behind Mikey Madison. Believe she was at #5 about a month ago.

At this point I think she actually has a pretty damn good shot given her story, and the fact that she never had ANY major award wins before this year.

I think the Academy loves to reward this type of comeback. (ie Brendan Fraser, Ke Huy Quan, etc.)

You can watch this for free with a 7 day Mubi trial (I had never heard of Mubi either but it is a legit site for artsy films).

Not terrible but I preferred the first 3/4 of the movie before it just became completely ridiculous.

Shocked at Demi's performance. I never considered her much of an actress. 3/4 into this film and liking it a lot.

And agreed Sue is a smoke show. In the last scene of Pump it Up the wife turns to me and said "isn't this getting really old" talking about the numerous scenes of aerobics and I said "no not at all".

Watched this last night using the MUBI trial.

Yikes! I'm not a horror fan at all, but love thrillers and things with well done social commentary, so went in hopeful.

It looked great and the acting was great but I agree it devolved in the end. It just seemed to drag on. Maybe it was because I was literally averting my eyes at parts but things just seemed to go on and on and on.

While Demi was really good, to think she is one of the front runners is wild to me. I don't think that's a Best Actress winning caliber performance.

Also the fact that the director as nominated over some of the other possibilities is a bit wild as well. It tried to say something, but where as recent movies like Parasite or Triangle Of Sadness, pulled it off, this one lost the reigns a bit.

Like a post above said, I initially thought they would be one consciousness, not separate. The premise didn't work that well as "old" Demi wasn't even conscious of the joys the young version was experiencing. Wanting to be young again? Sure. Hey, what about a young clone of you gets to party while you sit in a closet for 7 days and get absolutely nothing out it? Nope! I mean I understand what is was trying to speak to, but I just don't think it worked.

I saw this last night on HBO Max. The movie was as advertised, it was creepy, gory, crazy, but very well acted. Demi Moore and Margaret Qualley gave great performances. Qualley is a smoke show, I was today years old when I found out shes Andie Macdowell's daughter.

My problem with the movie is that it was basically a ripoff of other movies. The ending scene was pretty much a copy of the prom scene in the movie Carrie. The entire movie was very similar to Requiem For a Dream, it felt like I was watching the sequel.

Overall a decent movie to watch on a Friday night, but wouldnt watch it again.

At least 20 mins too long. Went off the rails a little too much at the end.

Watched it tonight…

I'll preface this by saying I absolutely hate gore horror movies so this was probably never the movie for me. I'm not sure what I expected but it definitely wasn't that. I guess I didn't really see the appeal of why Elizabeth would want something like that if she doesn't get to experience it? Going into it, I had assumed that they just shared the same consciousness. Not that they were two completely separate people (no matter how much they kept saying that they were one).
The final 30 minutes or whatever just drug on way too damn long and got so damn ridiculous. I did laugh when a boob grew out of the Monstro thing though.

Loved the first 3/4 of this - but that's not the ending I would have picked.
