I finally saw this tonight and it's easily one of Eastwood's best efforts in years, with a couple of caveats...

1) While it's incredibly engaging overall, and they milk such a good premise for all its worth, in the best way... it could have been a great movie in another director's hands, one who isn't 94 years old, who could tell the story a little tighter, and wasn't so damn on-the-nose at times. Yes, this is good Eastwood, but good Eastwood in this day and age is still more awkward and plodding than I prefer. It's a damn solid effort, but could have potentially been a real awards contender in the right hands.

2) The ending - basically, the very last scene and the exact beat they choose to end on - didn't work for me at all. Granted, there was only one way this thing was going to end, without making Hoult's character a complete monster. But man it's a downer, while also being one of those, "Wait, that's it?!" endings that doesn't ruin everything before it, but sure does leave on a weird/negative note. That said, it's at least a thematically sound ending, I just wish they could have found a different way to arrive at roughly the same thesis.

Overall, though, the audience really seemed into it. I can't remember the last time I saw a mid-budget adult drama like this, with a packed audience, but it reminded me that this is how it used to be all the time, and man do I want that back.

That said, somehow not knowing what they had, Warner Bros totally ****ed the release, as this was only planned for a super-limited, week-long theatrical run before heading to Max in December. But it's killing in the few theaters in which it is playing, so much so that WB decided to extend/expand the release to this weekend as well. So who knows, if it keeps performing, maybe the'll extend/expand it again. In other words, if you live in a big city and it happens to playing near you, definitely go see it...

I saw this listed on Max's upcoming slate and I thought it had to be some mistake that it was coming out this soon. That's crazy!

Why would anyone pay now instead of waiting a few weeks?

Maybe certain non-Max subscribers would rather pay a one-time $9.99 fee to watch it now rather than $9.99 (or $16.99/$20.99 depending on the tier) per month for Max.

True. I forget that max isn't free for everyone.

If I can't stream it, I don't watch it.

Just saw that this is available - wife and I are going to watch tonight.

Nothing groundbreaking. But really enjoyed it. I always love a courtroom drama so maybe I'm easy to please but wife and I both thought it was good.

It was good but not a movie that I would watch again.

I thought how Eastwood presented the trial was trying hard to be different but without any impact and benefit to the flow of the movie.

And was I the only one who expected the Joe Pesci counter in My Cousin Vinny when the witness clearly identified the defendant in the dark of night and the pouring rain?

70 minutes in and this movie sucks

It plays like a drawn out lifetime drama movie

Yeah it seems to have been very poorly tried case. I really wish we could have had some courtroom action. As someone without a law degree I think I could have played out several scenarios of reasonable doubt.

I really enjoyed it.

About a Boy was one of the most impactful movies to me as a young adult and it so odd to see Toni Collette and Nicolas Hoult and Toni Collette in a movie together again.

And so weird seeing my childhood crush's kid as a grown ass woman.

Gotta agree, this movie was soooo bad. Melodramatic, annoyingly on the nose, robotically acted by every single actor, lack of chemistry between Hoult and the wife, and the absurdity of the case and trial/deliberations made this all very difficult to watch.

Really liked it. Enjoyed that the ending wasn't a fairytale. Also liked that they just sped past the trial and got into the deliberation. JK Simmons was great

Totally agree. For those who say they hated the ending, how would you have wanted it to end? There is no "good" ending to this story.

My main problem with it. The one juror not changing his mind even though there was tons of evidence showing the defendant did not do it.

This was a must-watch for us because About a Boy is one of our very favorite movies. We enjoyed it a lot, even with the sudden ending. (I'd actually like to see what happens next in Juror #2 2.)

I really enjoyed it. Did a great job of putting you in the shoes of multiple people to ask, "What would I do?" A lot of no win situations.

Made me miss grown-up courtroom drama films. We only get these sorts of dramas as limited series now. I have 92 of them out there which I'm sure are good, but just don't have time to get to them all. Give me more well told stories that only ask me for 2 hours.

Having been on a jury with someone like this, it rang very true.

Just got around to watching this on a plane today. I thought it sucked.

It was a good idea that was lazily/sloppily executed
