Picked this up for free at Piranha Records in Round Rock. Great little record shop.

A little 1976 Boston.

SRV In Step. I've been to that record shop. Record shops are an absolute must when I visit places.

Nice! Waterloo and Piranha are my go to right now.

This SRV was one of the first records I put in my new collection.

not a on turntable, but the last album i listened to straight through (this past Tuesday) was "Bat Out of Hell".

(side note: I have a thumb drive with all my music on it. usually it's on "Shuffle" but I was thinking how digital music and particularly streaming music has changed our relationship to it. We used to, out of convenience AND tradition, listen to sides of albums or full CDs at a time. Now everyone has their own radio station playing (usually) a random mix of favorites. That's so different from listening to an album, with songs curated (i.e. selected for the album and put in their particular order) by the artist. The experience of a great album (or album side) was more than just the sum of its parts. I consciously decided to listen to albums on my last road trip to College Station and back. My wife and I listened to 3 John Hiatt albums (Stolen Moments, Slow Turning and Perfectly Good Guitar) and then Born to Run by Springsteen, Naked by Talking Heads, and finally Bat out of Hell by Meat Loaf.

You just described what hooked me back into vinyl. Bought an old console stereo as a furniture piece then discovered the turntable in it still worked. Thought I would buy 4 or 5 albums, tops, and only play occasionally for nostalgia. Right away, I realized I really liked listening to a whole album all the way through.

On my turntable is Leon Bridges new one "Leon"

Yeah, I think I'm appreciated the "album" a whole lot more.

Hearing the music as it was wanted by the artist.

Putting on a record with great care and patience is very cathartic. It makes you slow down and listen the way artists intended (like a book). Listening to records slows down the world and transports you to the very emotions you felt when you heard the song/record for the first time.

Great album from my dad.

It's cool hearing songs come on that bring back childhood memories. For example, my dad use to play The Zoo from the Scorpions a lot….now I know which album it's on.

Last 3 were "Green Onions" by Booker T and the MGs, "Blue Train" by Johm Coltrane, and "Exile on Main Street" by The Rolling Stones! There's nothing like putting on a vinyl!

Is discogs a legit website to order from? Anybody have any other recommendations on where to go online?

Oof its been awhile. I moved last year and haven't found a good place to set up my turntable in my new home office. I was looking at the upcoming releases for Record Store Day and the one i really want is the Rock-afire Explosion album. I have few of the original singles but not a complete set. There are weirdly quite a few (13 singles 2 full length albums) considering it was an animatronic band made up of anthropomorphic animals from a children's pizza restaurant in the 80's

I've never used Discogs other than to look up album info. But they are a pretty reputable site and they basically serve as the middle man for a lot of independent sellers and shops. Pretty much like ebay.

What you are looking for. Is it brand new stuff or are you looking for older used albums? There are a few stores in Texas that have really extensive collections of older or rarer stuff. Forever Young in Grand Prairie is a great example. They have a massive amount of stock that's typically all in great condition. They can be a little pricey sometimes but their selection is tough to beat. It's the only place I've ever seen an original 1st state Butcher Cover edition of Yesterday and Today by the Beatles.

Older stuff that is very particular to just random memories/nostalgia of my childhood. So kind of all over the place and not something I'd ever expect to find just walking into the local record store and poking around outside of a miracle, so that is why I thought I'd ask for reputable online stores.

Awesome little Austin band that I love. Think we've seen them live 3 times now. First time we ended up sitting/chatting with their parents lol.

No releases matter in the slightest if you are using an insufficient player. A vintage turntable is an absolute must. I recommend a Pink Triangle deck.

The most authentic equipment can be found in Scotland's rural antique shoppes, a trip far beyond even the imagination of your average American "music" consumer.

A minimum rig would be something like:

Linn Sondek LP 12 - Adikt cartridge
Naim Stageline
Naim Supernait II
Klipsch Cornwall IIIs
REL S/5 SHO

However, to listen properly a higher-level set-up is recommended. For example:
- TechDas Air Force One
- Clearaudio Statement v2
- La Platine Magnum
- Goldmund Reference II

Obviously people's opinions can vary slightly here, and few appreciate a liquid nitrogen-rectified belt, or some other "non-essential" features. Which is … Fine. But it's amusing how few appreciate the player, and focus on music. Well, hardware matters.

Truly the only way to properly enjoy vinyl is with a worthy player.

Discogs is the end all be all. It's an online marketplace so like nai06 said, it connects you to online sellers. But you can see all of their reviews - I've ordered from them tons of times and never had a bad experience.

If there's something you want, it will be on there. It may take a little bit to get the hang of the site, but it's pretty smooth once you do. You can also set up an account and catalogue all of your personal collection, which I finally got around to doing a few months ago, and highly recommend if you have a pretty extensive collection.

Other than that I like Turntable Lab and order stuff from them quite a bit

Thanks - I took the plunge and ordered a few today so hopefully it goes well!

I am going to try to go by the local record store this week and pick some stuff up too.

How dare people focus on the music.

No, my experience as a musical enthusiast did. The fact is this: vinyl albums need the proper hardware.

I've been quite clear and detailed on this obvious reality for some time, since shortly after my first post in early Spring, 1999, Blocker computer lab.
