For whatever reason A24 really fumbled this release, putting it in only a few theaters this past July, and didn't expanded it from there, at which point it basically fell off the map/got lost in the shuffle. Many who did manage to see it, though, loved it, to the point where it's now earned a second chance in theaters. Rather than compete with all the awards fare last fall, A24 decided to re-release it in theaters this past weekend, ahead of Oscar nominations this Thursday, for which Colman Domingo will almost assuredly be nominated for Best Actor, while the movie itself will very likely be a Best Picture candidate.

I finally saw it for myself this afternoon and can confirm that it is, indeed, so damn good, and absolutely deserving of whatever praise/awards consideration is coming its way. A key element of the movie is that, save for three professional actors - Colman Domingo, Sean San Jose, and Paul Raci - all other actors in the film are previously incarcerated inmates who have been through the acting rehabilitation program at the real Sing Sing prison, all playing themselves. Clarance Maclin, in particular, is incredible, and the overall authenticity he and the other former inmates bring really does take this thing to a whole other level.

Anyway, Sing Sing is currently theaters nationwide - including cities like College Station - and I highly recommend seeing it if/when you get the chance (though I imagine it won't be in theaters for more than another couple weeks or so). If anything, it also boasts one of the best trailers of the year, so at least give it a watch below...

Also, Greg Kwedar the writer/director is an Aggie. If one needed more motivation to see it.

Saw this movie when they were touring it, with a director's Q&A after. Absolutely beautiful story, well-told with great performances. And the statistics of the RTA program are incredible.

"The staggering number of former inmates back in prison three years or less after their release - that 60% recidivism rate - is just 3% for those who stayed with the Rehabilitation Through the Arts program."
