And no disrespect to any band or Johnny Cash but this is the greatest cover ever done imo - it is epic by one amazing band covering LZ, a band i never thought anyone could do justice to. But they manage to make it both an homage and also all their own. It sounds like LZ in the opening third, morphs to Tool in the middle third and in the last part it rises to something else entirely just amazing.

I've always loved this one from the reality show where INXS was looking for a new front man. The contestants were assigned a song to cover and Marty got "(Hit Me) Baby, One More Time." He took a bubble-gum standard and made it dark and moody.

My son played this on the way to school today and I had no clue it was a Bruno Mars / Lady Gaga tune, probably why it isn't near as heavy as a lot of their stuff - but good tune - I liked it!

It's insane live.

First heard these in the early 2000's. If you like early millenia metalcore, you'll love this.

And this one is fun

Borderline blasphemy about the original... however that was a great cover and looks like they had a blast making it. Cool song for drummers I can tell you.

I thought this was AI for a long time, but no... The guy who does it actually performs a lot of it and puts a lot of work into mixing tracks. He even started a live band that performs some of it. Apparently they're in North Texas, too.

ETA It's not an exact cover, but I think it fits the criteria.

Fantastic cover of one of my favorite Led Zeppelin songs.

One of the best covers of White Rabbit I've heard.

On the subject of cover songs in general, Second Hand Songs is a fantastic resource. I have discovered that a lot of songs that I thought were by the original artist, were in fact covers of the original and in some cases many versions removed from the original. Sometimes I will look up a song just to see who all has covered it and listen to some of the different versions.

Serious pick:
Just recently discovered this version. One of my favorite Counting Crows songs and I really like Corey Asbury's spin on it.

Comedy pick:
You can't have enough Richard Cheese on this thread. They're all funny, but there's something about the way he transforms this one because it's such a serious, dark, song.

Outrageously hilarious pick:
There I Ruined It is a fun follow. This one cracks me up every time.

My cousin introduced me to The Analogues, a Dutch group that organized in order to use period instruments to perform live many of the songs and albums that the Beatles never performed live. I think they're great.

Also, one of the members of The Turtles just died. They did one of the best covers of Dylan:

Looks like they started playing it live in July, according to setlist.fm. Wonder how long ago it was when the Musora video was filmed, maybe a few months before that

Still haven't seen them live. Would want to see them when Shinbone Alley is in the set

Not really the point of the thread, but it got me down a rabbit hole of "if such and such band wrote such and such song..." This dude is really good.

Also, for the Blink fans.

Alex Melton is great. His covers are always bangers

For those who love country covers of pop-punk songs, Muscadine Bloodline has an EP with covers of Jamie All Over, Only One, Here You Me, and Adam's Song

I won't say "Wow what a cover" because I like it but I will say it because I'm surprised.

Paul Anka covering Smells like Teen Spirit.

Also I loved this version of ac/dc back in black. It's ai though, but it slaps.
