A new docuseries dropped on Peacock a couple of weeks ago. It's pretty good and definitely a must-see for long time fans of the show. Each episode features a different subject matter, some better and more interesting than others.

Here are the four parts:
  • Five Minutes--Covers the audition process for people wanting to get on SNL. Pretty entertaining to see some of the old auditions but somewhat limited by the people they interview. (Does anyone really want to hear from Tracy Morgan or Bobby Moynihan?)
  • Written By: A Week Inside the SNL Writers Room--A peek inside the writers' room as they go through a typical week. IMO, the most interesting episode because they detail what a frenetic process it is just to get a sketch on air. They get 7-10 sketches ready each week and then do a dress rehearsal to determine the final show lineup, so there's a lot of cutting that happens at the 11th hour.
  • More Cowbell--Yep, an entire hour dedicated to the creating, writing and buildup of that sketch. It was very funny and good to see how the sketch was created. They were treating it as the best sketch ever, which I would argue with, but it definitely holds up. (It loses a few points because they just HAD to feature the Ms. State fans quoting the sketch word for word. Actually it's pretty cool.)
  • The Weird Year--Remember that season when Terry Sweeney, Robert Downey, Jr., Anthony Michael Hall, Randy Quaid and Danitra Vance were cast members? Yeah, I didn't either. Lorne Michaels quit the show a few years prior and this was his first season back. SNL was on the brink of cancellation and there was a lot of pressure to make the show great again. It didn't happen this year so they went really, really weird instead. It's an okay watch but probably my least favorite of the four parts.

ETA: I don't know why it put the damn URLs in the text but I can't take them out. Sorry about that.
