A really great, incredibly unique supernatural thriller from director Steven Soderbergh (the Ocean's trilogy, Contagion, Traffic, Erin Brockovich, Out of Sight, etc) and writer David Koepp (Panic Room, Spider-Man, Mission: Impossible, Jurassic Park, etc).

Very simple. Very short. Only 85 minutes. One location - a two-story home, which we never leave - filmed entirely from the perspective/point of view of a ghost observing/haunting a family.

That said, it's not necessarily a scary movie per se, in the sense that there are zero jump scares. Rather, it's more of a tragic family drama, simply told from the POV of a ghost whose intentions of which we're not quite sure. It's a sad story, but one that's told so well, and is so engaging from start to finish.

Really, I've never seen a movie quite like it.

Also, speaking of the finish, roughly ten of us were crammed into the parking garage elevator afterward - a mix of friends/strangers/couples - and in just that 30-second ride we all started excitedly talking about the ending (after realizing we were all in the same showing), everyone offering their two cents, trying to figure it out, making sure we had it right, etc, a conversation which then spilled into the garage itself. It was just a cool little moment, mostly among people who didn't know each other, sparked by a provocative ending and the exceptional movie that preceded it.

It's in wide release this weekend and I definitely recommend giving it a shot if you get the chance...

Soderbergh shot the entire movie himself, then had the edit locked 30 minutes after they wrapped. Amazing...

Soderbergh also married Jules Asner.
He's got talent in multiple ways.

Enjoyed the heck out of this one. Budget had to be about 300 bucks.

Great week for horror. Watching this tomorrow night and Companion on Friday.

Sounds a lot like A Ghost Story.

Nice.

Seeing Companion on Friday as well. It's actually playing in IMAX here, which is surprising/awesome.

Yeah, that's probably the closest comparison. I thought this was way better, though. As much as I loved everyone involved with A Ghost Story, and thought it would be right up my alley, ultimately I found it to be incredibly boring. Wheres this holds your attention from start to finish, is far more engaging, and again, only 85 minutes long.

Enjoyed that. Similarities with A Ghost Story, but way more of a conventional plot.

My only complaint is they seemed to be setting something up with Lucy Liu's character being involved in something shady and we never find out what. Unless I missed something?

Also, spoiler...
So it was the brother the whole time right?

Exactly. Because the brother's ghost wasn't bound by space and time or whatever, he was haunting the house/protecting his sister before he even died. But, like the medium woman said, he was confused and didn't fully know who he was, only that he had a purpose.

As for Lucy Liu's character I had the same frustration. Ultimately, though, I don't think it was supposed to matter. What mattered was that it was causing friction in their marriage and added to the family drama. That said, I do wonder if I/we missed a subtle key line at some point that might have clarified things a bit.

Could've just been a red herring.
