Good one. I did see it as a little kid in the theater. It was a long time before I got back in the water at the beach or a lake.

Saw this at the old Broadway Theater in San Antonio. Think it came out in 1975? Broadway closed down just a couple years later - 1977. Good times.

Aliens

There was no other science fiction film like it, seemingly modern day Marines versus the most iconic looking monster/s. It wasn't just a good action film as so many like to say, it was genre defining

The trailer itself evokes memories of feeling excited with anticipation, I was 12 at the time.

The screen going black and then the red lighting with an exasperated Hudson questioning how animals can cut the power.

For the movie itself I can vividly remember where I was sitting in the theater and everyone deathly quiet when Hicks pokes his head up through the ceiling grate with a flashlight - at which point someone yells out "Peekaboo!"

So, yeah,

Aliens.
I was probably close in age and actually read the book first. It set the stage like no other. I was so glued to the screen it was wild. Only thing that comes close is maybe Predator that I rented from Blockbuster.

We saw it in a drive-in theater as kids and it would be nice to see it in a real theater with real sound for the first time.

12 year old me waited 2+ hours when it was in limited release to see it at The Galleria in Houston. I have never felt that way watching a movie before or since, so it definitely fits the OP.

If I am thinking of this as recapturing a feeling from the first time I saw a movie, I think I would go with E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial. I was four when it came out and it is the first movie theater experience burned into my memory. I just remember how mesmerizing and magical that movie was in the theater. Think I saw that movie 5 or 6 times the summer it came out.

The first movie experience I remember was seeing James Michener's Hawaii with my grandparents. It was 1966 and I was 7 years old. Seeing topless hula girls is burned in my brain forever.

This and especially because I saw it first at home.

Same. We didn't really grow up near a movie theater and my parents weren't driving into town for one. I remember my dad getting Fellowship on VHS. Only remember seeing 3 or 4 movies as a kid in theater until i could drive myself. Lion King and Phantom Menace are the 2 I member

Shawshank Redemption in a heartbeat. I had no idea what was coming and I was certain that Andy took that rope to end his life. I thought for sure that Red was coming down to confirm the death of his friend and the movie was about to end on a sad note. When the sound of Ms. Fuzzy britches giving up her secrets rang through and that poster was ripped off the wall to reveal his path of escape, I felt like I had just been redeemed myself.

My answer is CABARET. I grew up listening to my dad's Broadway musical collections, and was in College when Cabaret won something like 7 Academy awards. I learned you do not know what the plot is just by listening to the soundtrack. The movie blew me away

E.T. was also my first movie going experience, but it scared the F out of me. I remember my mom had to take me out into the lobby when the government showed up in the hazmat suits.

Cliffhanger

Not a great movie, but it was a good memory. My dad had already watched it with my mom either earlier that day or the day before and took me to the theater to see it with him. Just he and I. Only time that's ever happened. It was the first R-rated movie I saw in the theater and my mom didn't approve, which made it even better.

The opening scene scared the crap out of me.

My husband and I went to see a movie that was sold out (can't remember what it was at this point) and we "settled" for a movie called "There's Something About Mary" that we had never even heard of.

That's the hardest I've ever laughed in a movie theater. I almost fell out of my chair at one point.
I'll admit, it was one of the few movies I clearly remembering listening my sht in hysterics in the theater. Vivid memory.

My 12 YO daughter wanted to watch the M Night catalogue, so we recently started it with The Sixth Sense.

The reveal is still good/novel...but, the rest of the movie did NOT hold up well. Poor sequencing, timing, dead time in scenes, etc.

Still, she did turn and give me the "What the What???" quip when it got to the final scene.

"The Game" with Michael Douglas and Sean Penn is my pick.

I'm sure some of you saw the ending a mile away. I was a teenager and didn't have much attention span back then (as if I'm really better now), but that movie was excellent...
