Issur Danielovitch's son plays a deranged laid off defense contractor heading home to murder his family. I think it's still relevant today and holds up well.

I've seen this several times over my life and it hits different every time. It's a very conflicting movie. Robert Duvall turns in a masterful performance.

The performances are good. The movie doesn't hold up very well in my opinion. It's very much of its time and place.

I don't think it's clearly that Michael Douglas's character is intending to murder his family. While his ex-wife's fear of the possibility is no doubt legitimate, I don't recall him making explicit threats.

Him telling the plastic surgeon's caretaker that after the party they're all going to go to sleep together in the dark was pretty clear to me.

To Sapper: I disagree. The disenchantment with society's filth holds up very well.

Good movie. I didn't actually see this for the first time until some time the last five years, but it felt relevant even 30 years later.

While I haven't seen this in several years, I recall most of the movie and I would say it's substantially more relevant now than it was then.

Society has only gotten worse since 1993. The 80s and 90s were peak America. Frankly, I don't think this is even arguable.

"D-Fens!"

One of Michael Douglas' greatest roles. So many great scenes.

It is a movie i like, but wouldn't say i enjoy it. Can fully relate to the despair/anger/disgust he has when looking at society. Can also recognize the blindness that he has to himself being a "bad guy". We all are in ways blind to how we can be selfish and act out in ways we would not see ourselves doing. Really think it was well done.
God loves you so much He'll meet you where you are. He also loves you too much to allow to stay where you are.

Douglas's character IS society's filth in the film.

His character is a mix of moral superiority complex with anger issues and mental illness. Odd that you don't think the other characters embody filth. Did you find the drive by shooters or the neo-Nazi virtuous?

Nope. But Douglas's character is not supposed to be sympathetic. He's just as much a bad guy.

I identify with that Whammy Burger scene nearly every time I go to a fast food restaurant.

Was someone arguing otherwise? I think we know he's a bad guy, just like Travis Bickle. It seemed you were dismissing the other characters and the cesspool of LA as the filth of the movie.

Ok. Taking full advantage this post. Critical drinker did an analysis/study of this film and it's absolutely amazing and worth your time to watch it.

Man I wish he'd do more of these types of videos I thrive on this kind of stuff…

He touches on a lot of the things y'all are mentioning here. But I'll add myself in the camp of I never thought he was planning/intending to kill his family. But that's one of the great things about great films like this you can infer different things from context clues the writers put in so the film relates to you more because of your experience.

So good.

Man I saw it once on VHS while my toddler niece was making way too much noise. Convinced me for a while I didn't want kids. She's like 33 now.
