Didn't see thread for this film that debuted in Toronto last year at a film festival and comes out domestically on April 4, 2025. Stars Paul Walter Hauser, Baby Billy Freeman, and Arya Stark and tells the tale of a guy who figured out how to game the system on the old 1980s game show " Press Your Luck". I've linked the trailer below, but highly recommend you also watch the first video - the actual 2-episode extravaganza featuring this guy in 1984.

If you don't remember the game or weren't alive then, you answered questions and then everyone got "spins" on this board of rapidly changing boxes that had dollar amounts, more spins, trips / prizes, and the proverbial "Whammies" - if you landed on one of those, your lost all your money and prizes, so you had to figure out when to bail.

Anyway, the show said that the light-up board was completely randomized, but this guy named Michael Larson, who was sort of a con artist, got obsessed with the show, started recording it everyday, and figured out that there were 5 distinct patterns that the board went in. He started studying it and eventually could predict when it was going to land on good money / prize spots / free spins by using the pause button on the VCR remote.

He finally drove out to LA, made up a story to get himself on an episode in the summer of '84. It took him a few times to get comfortable using the buzzer thing instead of his VCR remote. He hit a Whammy on his very first try, but once he got going, HOLY FORKING SHIRT BALLS

He spun 45 times in a row - I don't think either of the other contestants went more than 3 or 4, and wound up winning $102,000. He eventually stopped because, according to an interview, he was exhausted LOL.

They had to split the episode over 2 days because he didn't stop winning. The whole thing is on YouTube (40 minutes). You should really watch at least the hot streak. The reactions of the other players and the host are just hilarious. The hot streak starts around the 13 minute mark

I can't imagine seeing that live and thinking that guy is on a legit heater. That had to be incredible.

I'll give the movie a shot.

They way he is watching the board I think he picked up on a pattern. I suspect it is based on seeing two whammy cards hitting back to back but not sure
God loves you so much He'll meet you where you are. He also loves you too much to allow to stay where you are.

There's a great documentary about this somewhere out there (Hulu, maybe?) - goes into some of the details - I'm too lazy to find it but if you do it's worth the watch!

Few more interesting bits from Game Show Wiki

While Larson was running up the score, the show's producers contacted Michael Brockman, then head of CBS's daytime programming department. In a 1994 TV Guide interview commemorating the Larson sweep, conducted at the time the film Quiz Show was released, he recalled, "Something was very wrong. Here was this guy from nowhere, and he was hitting the bonus box every time. It was bedlam, I can tell you, and we couldn't stop this guy. He kept going around the board and hitting that box."
The program's producers and Brockman met to review the videotape. They noticed that Larson would immediately celebrate after many of his spins instead of waiting the fraction of a second it would take for a contestant to see and respond to the space they had stopped on, effectively showing he knew he was going to get something good. It was also noticed that Larson had an unusual reaction to his early prize of a Kauai trip, which was out of his pattern he initially looked puzzled and upset, but then recovered and celebrated after a pause.
At first, CBS refused to pay Larson, considering him a cheater. However, Brockman and the producers could not find a clause in the game's rules with which to disqualify him (largely because the board had been constructed with these patterns from the beginning of the series), and the network complied. Because he had surpassed the CBS winnings cap (at the time) of $25,000, Larson was not allowed to return for the next show.
The five original light patterns on the "Big Board" were replaced with five new ones for about a month, and those were replaced with a different set of five new patterns for another month. A further reprogramming of the board with 32 patterns was completed in August 1984, effectively ensuring that no one could duplicate Larson's trick; all subsequent versions employ this method. The show ended its run in September 1986.

He was pretty good in that one, but I always preferred Baby Billy's Bible Bonkers.

JFC dude. You couldn't even read the FIRST POST? That's what the entire show is about.

Yeah, you can kind of tell. I started to pick up on the fact that when it lit up on the bottom right, like 2 or 3 squares up, it was going to hit a big prize on top, just to the right of the middle. He hit that one several times. Pretty sure there were others, but that one got obvious.

From Wikipedia:
Quote:

In the second question round, Larson earned seven initial spins of the Big Board, and his last-place position earned him the first spin. In his first 15 spins, Larson occasionally missed his safe squares of four and eight, but was successful in avoiding Whammies, earning cash and prizes of $29,351 (equivalent to $88,833 in 2024). Beginning with spin 16, he then landed only on squares four and eight for 29 consecutive spins, totaling $102,851 (equivalent to $311,287 in 2024) in cash and prizes. After this 44th overall spin, Larson was losing his focus.[2] On spin 45, Larson missed the extra-spin squares: "I remember that moment. I was just so drained, […] I suddenly forgot where the whammies were. So I stopped and passed control of the board to the other players. I felt so relieved that it was over

The guys in the control room were on to him pretty quickly but couldn't do anything to stop him. He wasn't even trying to hide it.

It's kind of like old video games. Learn the patten and it's easy to win.

I loved Press Your Luck when I was a kid. Don't remember a guy wining like this, but it was probably during the school year and unlike today, there was no internet for word to spread about what happened.
