I love movies and TV with traditional alien characters like ET, Close Encounters, Alf, "Paul" starring Seth Rogan and Simon Pegg, Enemy Mine, The Last Starfighter, Signs, etc. I also like small town comedy dramas, having just finished all of Northern Exposure.
Resident Alien is not as good as any listed above as an "Alien" show, and it's not quite as good as Northern Exposure as a small town show, but with the two ideas combined, there's some weird chocolate/peanut butter thing happening where the combination is better than it should be. This is a great show. The alien drew me in, the small Colorado mountain town does everything "The Ranch" doesn't for small mountain towns, and the characters are great. Alan Tudyk is great as the alien, and it shows him in alien make-up just enough to keep me hooked. The sherrif, who is the only black guy in town and demands to be called "Big Black" which nobody does is hilarious. The goofy mayor, his hot wife, the insecure genius deputy sidekick, and let's not forget the antagonist (or is she?).... the woman who saved humanity from the machines in Terminator.... Sarah Connor herself.... Linda effin' Hamilton!
If any of this sounds interesting to you, give it a try. Originally made for SyFy, now streaming on Netflix.
