Saw this on someone's Tiktok so had to do my own. Usually did not take too much thought really most of these are just a notch above anything else to me. Interesting what it might say about people to narrow it down to a few that resonate with them longterm. 90s is loaded of course. 70s is iconic. 80s more action adventure for me.

Go back however many decades are relevant for you.

1960s:

GTFO with dropping Jaws. Jaws is a perfect movie that immediately set a new standard. It's the summer popcorn blockbuster that every popcorn blockbuster after it has tried and failed to emulate.

You either expand the list to four movies or you drop Rocky.

You drop Jaws and add Alien.

3 per decade is just stupid. Should be 10.

I dropped Rocky although that was tough. But Jaws put the summer blockbuster on the map.

similar dilemma for me in the 90s....

1990s
Silence of the Lambs
Goodfellas
Pulp Fiction

Leaving Shawshank Redemption off was brutal. Such a sleeper hit anyway and not many knew it was a King book, but the other three are so iconic.

Silence of the Lambs - the 5th and last film to win the Big 5 Oscars (Picture, Director, Screenplay, Actor, Actress). Nuff said about this masterpiece. One of the greatest films of all time.

Goodfellas - pretty much the definition of modern mobster flicks, with incredible music, a great cast, and the iconic tracking shot through the club. The only winner for an Oscar was Joe Pesci but the cast was amazing top to bottom. Scorcese's masterpiece should have won best picture and director (Dances With Wolves won - ugh). You can probably thank this film for the existence of The Sopranos not to mention the crossover of so many people in it.

Pulp Fiction - Tarantino's masterpiece and the film that broke through independent films in a huge way and his use of non linear timeline engaged audiences in a new way. Also made Samuel L. Jackson a household name (before that he was that guy from Do The Right Thing or his small part in Jurassic Park) and resurrected Travolta's entire career. His deep ensemble cast would also become both a major trend and his personal calling card as everyone wanted to work with him.

Shawshank was amazing but I had to go with those three.

Why not 20? Or 100?

That's kinda the point. 3 means only the best of the best. I doubt 10th on anyones list is really in the same ballpark as 1-3.

But I do agree about Alien. Actually it was closer to being in my top 3 than Rocky was for the 70s.

Expanding the number, good idea. Dropping Jaws for Alien? Just as dumb of a suggestion as doing it to add Rocky.

Alien gave us Ripley, the essential every"man" who had to rise to the occasion to fight off the perfect killing machine. And it happened to be a woman who was bad ass.

vs. A fish.

And Rocky > fish 100 out of 100x.

Who said it was my "only way". Just pointing out the facts. The acting is not great, (Robert Shaw, being the only exception), the special affects are famously bad. There is no real plot other than "shark kills people.. let's go kill it". It's not BAD, but it's certainly not great nor one of the best 3 movies of the 70s. The Godfathers, and then JAWS? Who do you think you are kidding?

Here we go, getting sucked into another atmAg "discussion". But I'll just stop after this post since I already have one teenager at home who loves to be contrarian and provoke just for the fun of it.

You literally posted that Jaws could be classified as simply a "MOSTER" movie, then literally lumped all "MONSTER" movies into one bucket that you labeled as mediocre.

You described that's how you view whole categories of movies.

Lol. Nobody's putting words in your mouth here. Anyway, I'm just having fun on this threads, since opinions are like *******s, everybody has one.

Just spit balling, some of these decades are impossible to rank just 3, but I bolded my top 3 leanings

1950s:
The Ten Commandments
12 Angry Men
The Bridge on the River Kwai

1960s: driven by the spaghetti westerns
Fistfull of Dollars
For a Few Dollars More
Cool Hand Luke
The Good, The Bad and The Ugly
The Birds
The Sound of Music
Hang'em High
The Alamo

1970s:
Rocky
Jaws

Dirty Harry
Deliverance
Papillon
Grease
Fiddler on the Roof
Escape from Alcatraz

1980s: maybe the best decade?
Back to the Future
Predator
Major League
Caddyshack
Rocky 4
Indiana Jones Trilogy (I have no idea how to rank these)
Ferris Bueller's Day Off
Rambo
Planes Trains and Automobiles

1990s: impossible to rank
Jurassic Park
A Few Good Men
Shawshank Redemption
Apollo 13
Forrest Gump
Good Will Hunting
Tombstone
Saving Private Ryan

After the 90s I think movies get much worse...

2000s:
Gladiator
The Departed
Ocean's 11
Remember the Titans
Batman Begins
Bruce Almighty

Jurassic Park can certainly be classified as a monster movie, especially if we're going to consider a great white shark a monster. The Silence of the Lambs would be a different kind of monster, but that's not the title I was pointing to.

That's like calling Carpenter's "The Thing" a "monster movie". There is much more to it than people running from dinosaurs. The whole science behind it, chaos theory, etc. There is a reason the original is still good and the sequels all suck.

JAWS on the other hand, is NOTHING but a monster movie from beginning to end. No better than the old Godzilla movies.

I will grant that the sequels are nothing more than monster movies. But the first one is not. A big part of the first one is about the science in creating them and all of that. The T-rex doesn't even break out of it's cage until; the 2nd hour of the movie. Prior to that it's all about DNA, and all of that crap. On top of that, once it goes into "monster mode" the movie is nowhere near as good.

Quote:

The Silence of the Lambs would be a different kind of monster, but that's not the title I was pointing to.
Just because there is a murderer in the show doesn't make it a monster movie. To me, a monster movie is one where literally the ONLY plotline is a monster(s) of some sort chasing the protagonists. Like Godzilla, the Blob, those flying Piranha movies, etc. Jaws falls squarely in that catagory.
