Outside of a few outliers their songs aren't holding up that well IMO

Technical Skill only goes so far. You have to be able to pull at the listeners heart strings consistently. They really don't.

For Gen X, Metallica is Kill Em All thru the Black Album, then we all went to college, had careers, got married, had kids, etc. Everything that happened after that is mostly sh** we didn't follow.

That roughly ten year span was and remains epic and is "Metallica" to us.

Go see them in concert. They still got it. Can't wait for them to be back in Houston this summer.

I went through the discography a couple years back before seeing them in concert. The bad albums are as bad as I feared, but honestly, Death Magnetic is my favorite album. It's strong.

Death Magnetic never got the respect it deserved. Every song is a banger and was overshadowed by being the next album released after St. Anger.

Judas Kiss and Unforgiven III (the build up and solo in that one are so great) are still some of my all time favorites

Nah, I just like good vocals and Metallica is lacking in that department.

This is neither here nor there but thought someone might appreciate the nostalgia hit.

When id Software released Quake in 1996, it was the first game that actually sourced it's music directly from CD audio tracks on the game disc (as it had Trent Reznor showcased on the soundtrack).

Because of this you could load up the game and then put in any music CD you wanted as you played. In 1996 this was really cool.

Metallica 'Load' came out a few weeks prior. So whenever 'Until It Sleeps', 'Hero of the Day' or 'Fuel' come on the radio I think of flying around the polygonal hellscape on my sister's Pentium with that playing "in game". Yes I could have just started the CD on a boombox when I started the game, but hearing it from the PC speakers made it hit different.

My cousin paid big money to get an ISDN line installed so he could have a better Quake experience back then.

Going to have to steal this. Perfectly said

Kill Em' All to Black Album are great. Handful of good stuff after that too. Concerts, even now, are good.

Having 4-5 great albums isn't nothing.

This lets me know we aren't listening to Metallica, or most music really, for the same reasons.

Why can't Metallica be more like Celine Dion

Hard Rock & Metal can pull at the heart strings.

Tool does it consistently.

Yeah I don't get that at all. Does Iron Maiden suck because they don't pull at the heart strings?

Nobody said anyone sucks. I just don't think they're that special.

Metallica has some nice riffs and solos at times, but the vocals are often times subpar. Enter Sandman comes to mind.

My favorite Metallica song is probably "Wherever I may roam"

Blame Bob Rock for convincing James he could sing.

I like that Metallica has different eras that sound different. They've been an interesting band to follow over the years.

They can still bring it live and that's impressive for their age.

For years I thought James was a good thrash metal singer but nothing else. Then I heard their "Ronnie Rising Medley" and I thought "Man was I wrong".

May Ronnie James Dio rest in peace.

The Black Album is pop trash for losers who aren't really headbangers. It's the only Metallica album I own.

My 16 year old asked if we could go to the Houston show in June and now it's up to like 15 of us across multiple families going. Can't wait. In a completely random encounter at Universal Orlando I ended up talking to Hetfield for about 10 minutes waiting on a ride. Cool dude. Told him "uno mas" was on the bucket list. Here we are!

All of their albums up through S&M were all solid. St Anger blew chunks, but then Death Magnetic was really good. Hardwired was alright, but 72 Seasons is largely forgettable. They have had a FAR better run than most.

nothing else matters, mama said, hero of the day, unforgiven(s), low mans lyric, outlaw torn, bleeding me,
I'd even add orion (how many artists can pull on heart strings with no lyrics!)

yea, i'm going to go ahead and disagree with you. bigly.

Ride the Lightning alone has one of the best A sides of any metal album. The B side is no slouch.

That's just one album.
