With my mom being from Glasgow I was pretty much raised on British Comedies. Here were some of the staples of my youth.

  • Mr. Bean-Not much to say about this other than it's a classic. What's really surprising is that for such an iconic show, it only ran for 1 season, 15 episodes.

Well there is a lot more in other forms - guest appearances on other sketch shows, several were done for BBC Comic Relief telethons, 2 films, some other vignettes that were included in video releases, and youtube actually funded some episodes, and he appeared in several music videos and commercials as well.

But you do have to dig around for a lot of that.

Endeavour. Great British crime show. Good personalities and some great dialogue. Watch from season one because there are continuing references to things that happened before.

The Office is so much better than the US remake.

^THIS 100%

Training which is Ep 4 is the most uncomfortable 30 minutes of TV ever.

I liked the US version just fine, they had to take it a little different way but it worked for that cast and audience.

The UK version is 12 episodes of pure gold plus the 2 Christmas Specials.

Is there a source to stream the Benny Hill show?

Dad used to let me watch when it was on HBO in the early 80s and would love to see if the show holds up after 40 years.

I don't know what qualifies as old, but is there a better old British show than Top Gear?

Blackadder is an absolute favorite (favourite).

Can't believe we got this far without mention of Still Game. Glasgow Scottish banter (Greg Hemphill and Ford Kiernan) with old pensioners and their pals. Absolutely brilliant.

And it's predecessor, Chewin' the Fat. Can't miss.

My favorite part of the entire series is Territorial Army Leftenant Gareff Keenan leaving Chasers in the sidecar.

Pretty much every scene with David Brent is cringe but when he becomes a consultant - oof. That's painful.

The Fall and Rise of Reginald Perrin
Reginald gets sick of his job "working for 'The Man'," and goes out on his own. Starts a store called "Grot"

The Good Neighbours
A couple goes "off the grid" in the early '80's.

Monty Python. Maybe it's not technically a series but it's awesome.

A more contemporary show that I loved was Toast of London.

Does "The Great British Baking Show" count? My wife and I love cooking shows and became totally obsessed with this.

And does "Downton Abbey" not count since it was a PBS show?

As a kid who grew up in the US and had no direct connection to UK tv... This thread is still making me super nostalgic. And whatever you do make sure your humor is attuned to *British Humour* because I think it's criminally underrepresented in the US.

I have had BritBox for the longest because I have always enjoyed British cinema, especially murder mysteries (detective dramas). Some more of my favorites:

The Adventure of Sherlock Holmes
Luther
Poirot
Miss Marple
Vera
Wallander
Prime Suspect (Helen Mirren)
Mallorca Files
Father Brown (the original 70s version and the present version)

If we're counting baking shows, there's some decent unintentional comedy with "Two Fat Ladies".

Extras is really funny. Outstanding cameos. Patrick Stweart and Ian McKellen were my favorites. Kate Winslet was really good, too.
Kate Winslet episode was prophetic. Daniel Radcliffe, David Bowie and George Michael were all hilarious too. Extras is probably my favorite sitcom ever.
