I can't believe that probably the most interesting, original studio in Hollywood may remake.....

BLOODSPORT

This movie introduced the world to Jean Claude VanDamme.
Changed Americans from using the word "Uncle" to "Matay"
Forest Whitaker appeared in the movie, and won Best Actor at Cannes the same year.
Millions of American teenagers were inspired to hold backyard Kumite tournaments.
And who can forget the greatness of Chong Li:

If anyone can honor and improve upon the tremendous, heritage American classic nature of the original, it's A24. Please be true.

Bloodsport, the 1988 martial arts classic starring Jean-Claude Van Damme, after trying (and failing) to get the project off the ground back in 2011. A24, the studio behind Midsommar and Uncut Gems, among other oddball flicks, is currently in negotiations to acquire the film rights.

I'm pretty sure "No Retreat, No Surrender" introduced the world to Jean-Claude Van Damme

I saw that way after Bloodsport. My dad took me to the theatre to see this. Great freaking day.

It's also interesting to note that the entire story, supposedly based on Frank Dux, is a load of horse**** he made up..ha

This would be awesome. Truth be told, I've been longing for a modern "Blood In Blood Out" remake...but it's set in San Antonio, and the the bangers are emaciated face tatted kids with the Marbach Mop Top.

OK. He was also in Breakin' and some other stuff prior to Bloodsport.
My point is JCVD was propelled to fame & stardom by Bloodsport.

Back on topic, not a month goes by that I don't quote Bloodsport at least twice.

"OK, USA"

"WAY TO GO, FRANKIE!"

"NOW I SHOW YOU SOME TRICK OR TWO..."

And my all time favorite:

"WHAT KIND OF A DEAL?

I was always amused that young Frank Dux wore a New York Giants shirt and a San Francisco Giants hat. Dude just liked big men, I guess.

You've never seen Bloodsport? Fix that immediately. It's an all time classic.

Semi related as it's a martial arts themed show, The Brothers Sun on Netflix has some callbacks to Gymkata and is a really fun watch.

My first thought when I saw the thread title was also Gymkata. Great idea for a campy karate-gymnastics hybrid themed movie, it just needed a budget of more than 27 dollars. I think a cheesy remake, even if the point is to make it a genuine comedy or spoof, would totally work.

But as for Bloodsport, I say leave this film (yeah, I said "film") alone.
Is it campy & cheesy? Yes.
Is it low budget? Yes.
Is it one of the most awesome cinematic masterpieces of the 80s? Absolutely!

There are so many quotes & scenes that I think of and reenact all the time.

For example, when I sneeze I often use every muscle in my body. It's an explosion. And about half the time, this is what I do...at least silently and/or in my own mind, for about 5 seconds afterwards:

Another example coincidentally happened this evening. The pantry door was slightly ajar. I closed it by doing a perfect reenactment of this famous scene:

And for the record, my wife was standing right there and has seen me do this with various doors that are slightly ajar a thousand times...and she has never even once been impressed in the slightest. Sadly, women just can't appreciate this film in the way that it deserves to be appreciated.

I always thought that squirrelly Inspector Clouseau looking dude who was obsessed with knee thrusts would have been a nightmare to fight.

I always thought a great movie would be about the making of Bloodsport and play it up as a comedy. Have Frank Dux just be a clearly full of **** - but self-assured, unathletic guy - yelling at some badass kung fu master about how it's supposed to look and how the Kumite worked. Show him swaggering into Hollywood, conning studios, making stuff up on the fly and somehow getting an entire movie greenlit while nobody bothered to fact check his story. Pretty sure there are some long form articles about it and its a fascinating story that's truly insane now knowing that this guy got a movie made and no one figured out he was lying his ass off.

Like a cross between The Disaster Artist and The Informant. Go make that movie instead.

Just checked. Bolo Yeung is still alive. If he isn't involved/cameo'd somehow, don't even bother rebooting.

That's just good screenwriting right there.
