Now this is a rarity, but they do exist.

D&D: Honor Among Thieves was one of my favorite movies of that year and I couldn't care less about D&D.

Also hoping this to be the case with Dune Part 3. (I hear nothing but bad things about the Dune sequel novels.)

Dune Messiah is a better book than Dune IMO. Much more interesting and complex and will make an excellent movie.

The later Dune novels written by Herbert get more strange and the ones written by Herbert's son are trash.

How to Train Your Dragon. Series is kind of meh (got it for my kiddo after she saw the movie), but the movies were all pretty great. I didn't realize how different they were, but the movie is definitely better than the books, IMO

I wouldn't go so far as to say "bad", but the movie did such a great job of getting the crazy out of the book for Forrest Gump. In the book he was captured by cannibals, went to space with an orangutan who he kept for most of the book through his adventures, was a pro wrestler, was committed to a mental institution, and was in two bands, including a one man band. He also dropped out of UA.
Before the movie, the book was barely above a complete flop, the movie version is light years better.

I haven't read it, but nobody ever talks about the book Die Hard was inspired from.

Big Hero 6…..

Yes this was actually based on an actual comic book….theres a reason why Stan Lee has a cameo in the end credits….

Station Eleven.

I loved the series on HBO and read the book after, and the book has none of the connection or charm that the series does.

The answer is the Godfather. Reading that book is like reading the Page 6 gossip column for 600 pags.

I know I'll regret posting this, but I'm going to add The Last of Us. I guess I shouldn't say it's bad because the games have universal acclaim, but cinematic video games do absolutely nothing for me. I played the first before the tv series started and thought it was a slog to get through.

Probably not the best example, but first one that came to mind was Running Man. It's been forever since I've read them, but "Mist" was the best one of those Bachman Books stories that King did back in the 80s.

It's definitely not bad source material, but I think the miniseries Band of Brothers is so much better than the book. The miniseries brings the people and events to life in a way that the book just can't.

It's the only book I've ever read where I thought the film was better.

It's already been said, but Forrest Gump and Jaws, the movie is so much better.

The Social Network is also a way better movie than the book "The Accidental Billionaires" even though it makes up a lot of stuff that didn't happen IRL.

How can D&D be "bad source material"? Its breadth is so wide it creates stuff like the movie above, games like Baldurs Gate 3, endless books, other movies and games.

It's one of the best source material out there in that there's something for everyone.

I figured there would be pushback on this.

Title was just for the dy/dx. More of a personal taste thing for me. Never been a fan of any of that hardcore nerdy high fantasy stuff like D&D, Magic the gathering, etc.

Obvious exception being Tolkien.

I didn't want to push it, but you're right. D&D is the birthplace of imagination for millions of people and I'm sure tons of fantasy projects. I understand not liking it, but that's not the same thing as it not having good source material.

Comics edition: Civil War is iconic but it's really not great. Movie is superior IMO.

The people in the book are all massive *******s with the exception of Brody. I thought the movie did a MUCH better job of making you care about the characters.

One of the very few times we agree. Though that goes for almost any early 19th century novel. They're all 5000 pages of filler and 5 pages of plot.

And what's the deal with Brody's wife hooking up with Hooper? So bad.

Not that it was bad(just different and not as good), but The Prestige the novel is nowhere near as good as the Nolan film

You ever read Mark Twain's essay bashing it? Pretty funny.

This is going to have a ton of variance. Most of the movies only borrow the book title and villain's name, and maybe a few plot elements. Moonraker is a great example: one of the best of the books, one of the worst of the movies.

Yes, this is true. Live and Let Die followed pretty closely. These are the only two books I have read of the series
