12 Mighty Orphans is a really good movie based on a true story in the mold of Hoosiers

I believe it was on the Special Edition DVD I had way back, but they had the actual championship game as a DVD extra. It was interesting to watch.

Fun fact about Milan's state championship run (the real Hickory) -> in the quarterfinals they beat Crispus Attucks HS who had sophomore Oscar Robertson, one of the best players in NBA history - only player to average a triple-double for a season until Westbrook and Jokic did it in recent times. Robertson's team won the next 2 state championships.

For whatever reason, most sports stories seem to suck. Hard to shoot realistic action (especially football) and they always seem to get really cliche. A lot of people love Remember the Titans, but it was gag level of cliche IMO. The complex character of Norman Dale and Gene Hackman's acting chops behind it just put Hoosiers on another plane. They also did a solid job on making the basketball realistic, especially for the era

King Richard was a pretty good sports movie. Will Smith famously (infamously?) won an Oscar for it.

Hustle was pretty good with Adam Sandler and it featured real-life players and coaches in pretty good acting roles.

Other than that, Creed as a series?

We need more sports movies.

ESPN (I think) broadcast that game when Indiana decided to separate its state basketball tournament into divisions. This was sometime in the late 90's. What I remember of it was Milan holding the ball and dribbling for several minutes at a time. Very different brand of basketball.

Slightly off topic, but same spirit as OP. Got worn out watching mom and 12yr daughter watching Gilmore Girls. Suggested Friday Night Lights. Might be a little advanced for a 12, but dayum it's still awesome.

For as great as Hoosiers is, and for as good of an actor as Dennis Hopper was, the scene where Shooter shows up on the court is some of the worst drunk acting in cinema history.

Tried to rewatch FNL recently… a little too much teen drama for me. That prayer at the end of E1 hits perfectly though.
