OP, how did it go? I don't know your nephew, but I know young people and I'm betting he didn't like it. Thought it was boring.
Other good Basketball Movies: Hustle- mentioned Blue Chips White men cant jump- original Coach Carter He got game Glory Road The way back- Ben Affleck Finding Forrester- semi basketball Semi Pro and Teen Wolf
I read somewhere that every player on that team played some form of college basketball (likely D2/D3) EXCEPT Chitwood. What's crazier is to think Ollie played college ball but I'm sure he was sandbagging it for the film. Kinda hard to judge a kid on how he plays when he shoots FT's granny style.
I don't think very many played college ball. I think only Buddy and Rade. Ollie may have later; he was apparently a good HS player so was definitely sandbagging bigtime. That said, Jimmy never even made his HS team. Cut 3 times.
I don't think there was an actual person named Jimmy Chitwood. He was based on Bobby Plump who was Indiana Mr. basketball and played at Butler - he's the guy who hit the winning shot on the real team. Ray Craft who was the team's leading scorer also played at Butler.
What do you boys want for breakfast BBQ ?.....OK Chili.

Sorry I didn't use the real actor's name, I was referring to all the actors and not what occurred for the players they were based off in real life.
I believe it was on the Special Edition DVD I had way back, but they had the actual championship game as a DVD extra. It was interesting to watch.
ESPN (I think) broadcast that game when Indiana decided to separate its state basketball tournament into divisions. This was sometime in the late 90's. What I remember of it was Milan holding the ball and dribbling for several minutes at a time. Very different brand of basketball.
Right- in the movie Jimmy gets the ball, holds it for a minute, then shoots, but in real life the guy held it for several minutes.
Sorry, I don't pay attention to the Entertainment board much.
The showing went great. Honestly, I had forgotten how big of a role Hopper's character played in the movie. The kid's dad was a bad alcoholic, so he thought the movie was about that, not basketball.
But, from a sports perspective, he loved the climax scene "I'll make the shot", and the coach's trust in the team.
Generally a good experience. Showing Shooter's alcohol problems was really interesting from a grown-up perspective. Shooter listening to the championship game from a rehab center was especially poignant.
As for Hopper's chops, I have only this:
It takes a special kind of brainwashed useful idiot to politically defend government fraud, waste, and abuse.
