Random observation: My local Cinemark is showing Mission Impossible in 14 time slots today, all in Standard Format. They are showing Lilo & Stitch in 19 time slots in Standard Format and another 7 time slots in Real 3D, for 26 total today. In what world does that make sense? Is it the theater or the film producers that determine the scheduling?

Are you asking why a nostalgia based kids film has more screens than Mission Impossible?

Especially with a 3 day weekend and schools getting out this week across the country. Seems the smart bet. MI is great, but people aren't taking kids to it.

Lilo & Stitch is "nostalgia based"? Who knew? The MI movie franchise started in 1996 based on the popular 60s/70s TV series. There have been 8 MI films, all starring Tom Cruise. I presume MI Final Reckoning is going to far outpace any kids movie in box office sales. Maybe I'm wrong.

You will likely see a lot of those theaters drop off for Lilo & Stitch after the first week, but MI will hold steady for a while. Kids movies, especially at the start of summer, will be packed for opening weeks. Then, during the rest of summer they will show the kids movies in the morning and switch out some of them to adult movies in the afternoon/evening.

Nostalgia based in that parents with small kids probably grew up watching the original L&S. Its the end of the school year + a 3 day weekend so it wouldn't be surprising to see families going to the movies.

I think MI will be fine and will benefit from having a little bit of runway. Dead Reckoning P1 got screwed by releasing a week before Barbenheimer, but even then they've never had the staggering box office numbers of something like a Marvel film or James Bond or something

Look at the MI runtime for part of the reason. The other is that Lilo was tracking significantly stronger than Mission.

I wanted to see The Amateur, but it is no longer at the theater I typically attend ... that's what I get for delaying seeing.

Lilo is projected to crush MI this weekend...it won't be close. Probably double the BO.

Lilo & Stitch is about to have the highest grossing Memorial Day weekend in box office history. Families are starving for family entertainment, and Lilo & Stitch is scratching that itch in a big, big way.

I think Mission: Impossible is the greatest action franchise of all time. And despite the fact that The Final Reckoning is about to have a franchise-best opening weekend, it's STILL going to do A HUNDRED MILLION DOLLARS less than Lilo & Stitch this weekend.

Which is insane.

But there's your answer.

Kinda wild that MI has gone up against juggernauts with their last 2 releases. How far out do studios start to formulate ideas on how their projections are looking vs. direct competition?

Oh, from day one. But in a situation like this, I think everyone wins. Sure, there's some overlap, but the audiences for these two movies are pretty different. I don't think Paramount is at all bummed they're up against Lilo & Stitch. In fact, Lilo & Stitch may even be generating more business for The Final Reckoning, where half the family is seeing Lilo & Stitch but dads or the other half of families or whatever are seeing The Final Reckoning simply because the kids are a few theaters down seeing Lilo & Stitch.

I'm not surprised on the number of showings for these two films, but I'm a little surprised that the MI film didn't have at least one theater of MI with the higher quality screen. Do you have an IMAX/IMAX imitator at your local Cinemark, possibly something with X in the name?

Lilio & Stitch Run Time: 1 hr 45 minutes

MI Final Reckoning Run Time: 2 hrs 50 minutes

That's probably the main answer. Although, I am surprised MI wouldn't get a higher quality screen.

Seriously? The Mission Impossible movies have been massively popular and are all pretty good, other than #2

Interesting. My local Cinemark had the Milo kid's movie on the XD screen during the day showings and Mission Impossible had the 8 pm and 11 pm showings.

And now your previous comment makes so much more sense. It's also so typically TexAgs, judging something (in this case six somethings) you haven't even seen.

I mean 8 movies is a lot, and people do get worn out on it eventually but I don't think MI is the same thing as a billion F&F movies. These long franchises can get tiring but MI is at least putting out entertaining stuff.

We have one showing per day on the XD screen in College Station's Cinemark. Going tonight at 9:00 PM.

How many Bond movies are there? 20 something? I don't think people will tire of a franchise just because there are a lot of movies. As long as the quality stands up, people will continue to go see them.

Lilo & Stitch in week 3. $33M. More than twice what Mission Impossible did in week 3 at $15M.

Do you want me to tell you that in just 3 weeks, Disney profited more on Lilo & Stitch than they lost on Snow White?

Bc that's how this business has worked since the beginning of time. Home runs, bombs, and more of the former to stay in business.
