Don't kick me out of the Entertainment Board for this, but…………. Sweet Home Alabama!

I play in a band. I once told the other guys I would play Sweet Home Alabama on repeat for a four hour bar gig, if they were willing. Didn't happen, but I woulda.

To have a deeper answer, I'll also add Blue Sky by the Allman Brothers. I love Southern Rock!

Kind of incredible that they are both widely recognized as the origin of southern rock and considered by many to also be the pinnacle. Southern rock was first coined in reference to their blend of roots rock, blues, gospel and that slide guitar sound.

I always tell people Southern Rock was born in 1969 with the Allman Brothers Band and that was also the best it ever was. Not that there hasn't been great music in the genre since but I'm pretty much of the opinion that they nailed it right out of the gate.

I'll take Whipping Post as the greatest ever personally and say the live version from Live at Fillmore East in 1971 was the pinnacle.

I consider them Southern Rock, but they always occupy that weird space because they're from California.

With that said, "Run Through the Jungle" is my favorite if it fits this category.

Yea it seems like there has been some debate as to whether the Allman Brothers or Skynyrd were the kings of southern rock, which is laughable to me. Skynyrd was an unsophisticated redneck attempt at what the Allman Brothers were doing, and they never got close. The Allman Brothers could run circles around Skynyrd musically.

CCR went more southern in my opinion later as that became more popular.

Some people called their sound swamp rock and it had a little more country and rockabilly influence with that cajun sound versus what the Allman brothers did which was roots rock, blues, gospel and that slide guitar sound.

And yeah the California thing - most people don't even know they were not from anywhere near Louisiana. And certainly not "southern".

But neither was Neil Young - hell he is Canadian. His early music too was more country/folk rock but he leaned into southern rock after The Allman Brothers.

There is room for them all - but The Allman Brothers really originated it and perfected it imo.

Woah, understand the respect for the Allman Bros but disagree with the minimization of Skynyrd.

I saw that Molly Hatchet video recently, I never knew what those dudes looked like. Was surprised to see the lead singer had "standard" lead singer good looks. I figured he would look Yosemite Sam or something.

Great list. I was going to throw in some Black Crowes if not mentioned by the bottom on the thread.

Blackfoot "highway song" for me is perfect southern rock song.

It's slow and vocal based to start and then it goes right into classic fast southern guitar work with a lead and army of guitars. It's also long. Southern rock needs to be long. It's not a radio tune.

Allman Brothers. Lynyrd. An army of guitars and they play forever.
